The Cowboys are 36-13 and coming off a near-sweep of OU in one of the biggest series’ of the season. It’s the first time they’ve won 36 games since 2008.

OSU ace, Jason Hursh tweeted out a photo of the baseball uniforms OSU will be wearing today for their home-opener(s).

They’re unbelievable.

An ode to yesteryear and the glory days of Robin Ventura and Pete Incaviglia (see below).

And I thought last year’s were great.

Baseball

On Tuesday we looked at OSU’s litany of catchers and its strong infield, so today we’re going to look at how the outfield looks as we head into the 2013 season.

Here’s the list of outfielders on OSU’s current roster.

NameYearHometownTeam last yearAvg/HR/RBI
Blake BromFreshmanWichita Falls, TXHigh school.369
Gage GreenSophomoreWichita Falls, TXOSU.237/1/6
Corey HasselFreshmanStillwater, OKHigh school.341/7/33

Trey WhaleySeniorLubbock, TXOSU.299/1/19
Jarrett HigginsSeniorHouston, TXOSU.252/0/15
Aaron CornellJuniorRoff, OKOSU.088/0/2

There us, uh, zero power in the outfield. OSU returns a grand total of two home runs from last year’s group of outfielders. This might be all right though given that the group stole a combined 29 bases, but the power is going to have to come from somewhere.

The rotation should be Higgins in CF, Saxon in LF, and Fish in RF but Manute Bol-like frosh, Blake Brom (he’s 6’11, 187!!!) could push for time as well as some platooning from the other guys.

Yesterday we looked at OSU’s litany of catchers, today we’re going to look at how the infield is shaping up.

Here are the seven guys on the roster listed at infield positions.

Robbie Rea is the returning star — he was second team All-Big 12 last year and led the team in batting average and multi-hit games. He also attended Cowley County Community College (a Scattergories all-star move if you roll “C” for “schools”).

Rea hit .256 over the summer in the Coastal Plain League. He will make the move from second base to be the Pokes’ everyday third baseman.

After that it gets a little dicier.

OSU baseball wallpaper is pretty awesome

Kyle Porter —  February 13, 2013 — 3 Comments

OSU has released its baseball wallpaper for the 2013 season and these are my five favorites.

I was at this game — it was a sub-regional game against TCU when Jordy Mercer hit three bombs including the walkoff you see here. His helmet nearly landed on Gallagher-Iba. One of my favorite all-time OSU sports moments.

Simply the greatest college baseball player in the history of the sport.

Great work here on the design. Also, love the script writing in the dugouts.

BaseballLet’s get going with part I of our baseball preview today. A look at OSU’s catchers.

The Cowboys carry five catchers on their roster this year — a seemingly excessive amount, until you consider the experience they have at the position (see chart below).

It’s not pretty.

The Cowboys didn’t have an everyday catcher last year and I’d be surprised if they have one this year either.

In fact, it might have the first five-man platoon in college baseball history.

The Dream Coaching Staff

Kyle Porter —  June 12, 2012 — 6 Comments

Remember in 1997 when the Spurs finished with the third worst record in the NBA and somehow struck NBA draft gold by landing Timmmmmay D. with the #1 overall pick?

That’s pretty much exactly how I feel with OSU’s baseball team right now. Except that Josh Holliday is playing the David Robinson role and Rob Walton is a 6’11” black man from the Virgin Islands.

This time last week we were all wondering who the other favorites were in what appeared to be the Walton sweepstakes for OSU’s head coaching position.

Then on Friday Mike Holder calmly handed the keys to OSU’s most historic of the big three collegiate sports to young Josh Holliday. And Holliday turned around and hired Walton to an assistant coaching position.

Josh Holliday – Man of the People

Kyle Porter —  June 11, 2012 — 5 Comments

This was sent along to me by one of my readers, I’m blown away…

Yesterday I finally got around to Coach Holliday’s introductory press conference. Twitter said he nailed it, and, as well all know, the internet never lies. My girlfriend even joked she’d drink Kool-aid for him. Thankfully he’s happily married.

Inspired by his presser I strolled over to okstate.com looking for information on baseball related donations. I was upset to find nothing special at all. It took me four links to find a HomeRun Club PDF with Frank Anderson all over it.

Defeated by the prince of botched bunts I wrote Mike Holder an email expressing my disappointment about fundraising. He forwarded my email on to Coach Holliday and this morning at 8:30 Josh called to talk.
