Getting Defensive
Currently, Glenn Spencer’s staff looks like it will grow with the growing number of assistants next year.
From a football standpoint, coaches have another season to figure out how to designate their bonus assistant. The rule doesn’t go into effect until January 2018.
“I’m not for sure,” Gundy said, “but I’m leaning toward the defensive side to even out the numbers.”
OSU has five assistants dedicated to offense and four to defense currently. [TulsaWorld]
Per the same article, the split in-state (at this point) is TU looking at evening the offensive/defensive sides while Bob Stoops is up in the air. Texas and Iowa State have mentioned the desire to add a special teams coach. Dana Holgorsen is leaning offense.
So what do we do, pull Glenn off the linebackers and just let him coordinate? Current defensive analyst Brian VanGorder played linebacker in college and coached linebackers for the New York Jets and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Seems like a pretty good fit to me.
Laughable Offense
For folks who pay attention to Mike Gundy, the “11-2” Alamo Bowl rings were no surprise.
I didn’t particularly notice the faux 11-2 record on the jewelry. Actually, I would have been more surprised had they read “10-3.” If you didn’t see this coming, you haven’t been paying attention.
Mike Gundy referenced his 10-win team throughout the build-up to the bowl, never mind the Cowboys’ 9-3 record. We thought that was bold, and this was before the wrestling singlet, the “Big Daddy” signing day mug and the rattlesnake hunt with Wild Bill.
Gundy is swinging for the fences. If he misses and winds up in the dirt? He could give a rip. [TulsaWorld]
In an age where reporting on the negative feels to have overwhelmed the positive or neutral, Gundy is a breath of fresh air in college football. Gundy avoids headlines for player discipline while grabbing as many as he can with harmless theatrics, what a gem.
