Plugging the Middle

Gone is NFL-bound Vincent Taylor and Mote Maile and last year’s depth must rise to the top.

“As a unit we are very confident,” Daniels said of the defensive tackles. “Athletically, we are very balanced. We have guys that are faster than the others, we have guys that are stronger than the others, but as a unit we are very balanced. I feel like us in a three-man front or us in a four-man front are very balanced and we are going to get after the ball no matter what.”

In the spring there was Daniels, Osborne, and that pleasant surprise in the former end in Carter. The tackle position also had sophomore Taaj Bakari and red-shirt freshman Cameron Murray. The question is will either of them be ready to assume a major role in the rotation or, more likely, will incoming transfers Enoch Smith and Fua Leilua be the answers. It takes five. [Go Pokes – $]

The three-man front mention is interesting. Gundy talked about how new defensive analyst Brian VanGorder had some experience in three man fronts and how that’s appealing.

Depending on the health of Brailford and how the incoming junior college tackles adjust, there could be some flexibility in fronts – especially given the sneaky depth of the linebackers and the flexibility of Trey Carter, a defensive end-turned tackle.

Most Dynamic Duo

Not the first and more to come surely but Rudolph-Washington proclaimed the best duo for 2017.

In the past five years, only three quarterbacks have thrown for at least 4,000 yards in a season with four or fewer interceptions: Bryce Petty in 2013, Marcus Mariota in 2014 and Mason Rudolph in 2016.

Rudolph averaged better than 9.0 yards per attempt and gets both of his primary targets (James Washington and Jalen McCleskey) back for another year. Not a single Big 12 team ranked in the top 50 in passing yards allowed per game last season, so Rudolph should have the freedom to throw darts all over the field once again. [Bleacher Report]

It’s rarefied air where Mason is residing. But in a game where graduation and big money in the NFL beckons, you’ll rarely see a pair like this together for a couple of years – 2017 will make three (and 3/13’s) for Rudolph and Washington. From Baylor/Bedlam/Cactus Bowl to now, they’ve just been phenomenal.

And it’ll be a blast to watch them go out in style.
