Jawun Projections

Really insightful stuff here by Barstool on Jawun’s pro prospects:

I’d be shocked to see Evans fall outside of the first round. He’s capable to be a starting point guard for some teams, but he’s a valuable second unit guy. He can come in and give you scoring and shooting right away as he continues to develop these newer shots around the rim.

If he can learn how to finish in traffic he’ll start for any NBA team after his rookie contract. When you look at teams in the bottom 5 picks of the draft, there are a lot of nice opportunities for Evans. He could go to the Nets and start right away or a team like the Spurs and battle Dejonte Murray to be the next in line after Tony Parker. [Barstool Sports]

If we were at all surprised to see Jawun go, “shocked to see Evans fall outside of the first round” was enough of a prevailing sentiment that moved his camp in that direction. The NBA throws themselves at dudes who can do stuff like this:

The article breaks down his NBA-readiness very well and gives some potential landing spots. Late in the first to Brooklyn (woof) feels like the Cleveland Browns of the NBA but it’d be really fun to see him in San Antonio in a good system. The Thunder at no. 21 would be a reach but they’ve never shied away from taking their guy whenever and they desperately need a Kevin Durant clone backup point guard…

Succession Planning

Boynton has one heck of a plan for the guard rotation.

What Kendall (Smith) will bring is an experienced backcourt player. A kid who can play multiple positions, who’s been around the block so to speak. And I think with losing Jawun, at this point, we felt like we needed a little bit more experience there. I love our young guys, and I think they’ll all be really good, but having a guy who’s been there, who knows what it’s like to feel those pressure moments at the highest level will be something that’s invaluable for us.”

…“Michael Weathers is a kid from south of Kansas City, so a kid who grew up in Big 12 area and seen Big 12 basketball as a kid. But was at Miami (Ohio) who Coach Cooper coached. Was the MAC Freshman of the Year. He brings a sense of competitiveness.

This next year will be a challenge for him because he won’t be able to compete, he won’t be able to travel with our team but he’ll bring a sense of competitiveness to our practices that’ll help a lot of the other guys get better. And then when he’s eligible, we’ll lose Kendall and he’ll be ready to step in and be a big part of our backcourt as well. A guy who’s got tremendous athleticism, great length and a big, big skillset.” [Go Pokes $$$]

The layering of the guard rotation is flawless. Play Smith, Brandon Averette and Zack Dawson now then swap in a marinating Weathers a year later. Step one in the Big 12 is top shelf point guard play and this crew will have a shot at effectively managing some games.

Now, among other things, let’s see what happens with wings and big men.
