Ramon Speaks

The more Glenn Spencer explains, the better Ramon-to-Safety feels:

“He’s got top-end closing speed,” Spencer said. “Once he gets it diagnosed, he really can track the ball. He does a good job of reading eyes of quarterbacks. What we thought, him playing back there, having a little bit more freedom than he does at corner, it’s helped him a lot.” [O’Colly]

That word “freedom” both makes me squirm and excites at the same time concerning Ramon in the open field. You can see him being in the wrong place but you could also see the below happening with greater frequency.

Who is John Cooper?

A little history and context on the new OSU basketball assistant.

And though Cooper doesn’t appear to have past ties to the Oklahoma and Texas areas — the states where 80 percent of OSU’s 2016-17 roster came from — he does have experience.

Cooper spent the last eight seasons as a head coach — five at Miami (Ohio) and three at Tennessee State. He was 43-52 at Tennessee State and at 59-100 at Miami (Ohio) before he was fired on March 10.

Prior to becoming a head coach, Cooper worked from 1995-2009 as an assistant coach at power-conference schools. That’s how he and Boynton are connected.

Cooper was an assistant at South Carolina from 1995-2001. That means he was on the staff that recruited Boynton and coached him his freshman season, 2000-01.

Cooper went on to stints at Oregon (2002-04) and Auburn (2004-09) before landing his first head-coaching job.

Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Cooper played at Wichita State from 1987-91. [TulsaWorld]

Boynton has planted himself between two experienced assistants with wide ranging ties. A former head coach is nice to have on staff, Cooper is a James Dickey with ties in other parts of the country. This staff is decidedly not-southwestern (Texas, Oklahoma) and that’s a contrarian move for the Big 12.
