Doug’s X-Factor

A great point by Doug Gottlieb in a recent interview with Fox Radio:

My school was just jilted by a false prophet, man. He came in saying “it’s not about the money, I just want to be here forever.” Then got offered a raise and said “Hey, I want to be compensated commensurate with my talent.” And we said, “Hey, I thought you wanted to be here forever?” and he left. With that in mind, I think the timing of it makes this even better that Oklahoma State needs somebody who doesn’t just say but will show great loyalty. [Fox Radio]

Reservations about Doug are notable but they have to be weighed against one of his greatest qualities: he’s home. And part of what Doug pointed out is that Oklahoma State gave other alumni a shot when their resume didn’t necessarily mandate that.

Mike Gundy was a part of staffs let go at Baylor in 1996 and Maryland in 2000 before strategically being brought back under Les Miles to take over his throne. Josh Holliday was a solid assistant at Vanderbilt but unproven as a head coach before he blossomed at his alma mater.

So the question is this: does the fact that Doug, an intriguing candidate for numerous reasons, would stay if he does well supersede the probabilities that he doesn’t get the job done as a rookie?

It’s hard to believe at this point that anybody else will be loyal after one of Iba’s coaching grandchildren walked.

Gundy on Doug

It doesn’t sound like he’s quite ready to do the Doug-ie #MarchDadness

“I think the reason that his name is involved is because he’s an OSU guy,” Gundy said. “Whether he could perform and follow through for what the administration here is looking for is yet to be seen. I don’t know if anybody could predict that one way or the other. It’s almost impossible.

“I’m not involved in the decision making in who the basketball coach is, so I don’t even know what questions I would ask a guy that hasn’t coached at this level … there’s a roll of the dice involved.” [NewsOK]

While he’s not ruling out the option, he alludes to the uncertainty of Doug. There’d be tons of entertainment value to watch Mike interview some basketball coaches with all the Gundyisms and statistics thrown around:

“Now Doug, number thirteen was a ma-tour player. When you’re looking at a guy, what kinds of things are you looking for in his family tree?”
