A Football School

It’s no longer the basketball program that floats the athletic department.

Apparently of the belief that Oklahoma State isn’t committed to building and sustaining an elite basketball program, Brad Underwood quit the Cowboys job after only one season as head coach.

The university’s leadership responded not with a pursuit of established, successful head coaches, but with the convenient and affordable promotion of Underwood assistant Mike Boynton.

The basketball situation provides a resounding reminder that Oklahoma State has become a football school. [TulsaWorld]

This just felt like a move that an SEC school would make, didn’t it? The AD sits down with $5m and gives 75 percent of that to the football coach, rest goes to finding a budget-friendly roundball captain. Holder is an alum with 50 years invested in the university, he wants success but it was sure an interesting business decision.

Robert Allen says the line didn’t exactly wrap around the block for the OSU opening.

I can tell you absolutely that there were outside candidates contacted and asked about their interest. I’ve been told that the interest was not extremely high. The departure of Brad Underwood did not leave scorched earth in Payne County, but it did leave scorched opinions, a lot of those in the college coaching community.

This is going to hurt the feelings of a lot of Oklahoma State fans, but right now Stillwater, Oklahoma State, and hallowed Gallagher-Iba Arena are not high on the list of places to coach for head coaches at the major and mid-major Division I level. [GoPokes $$$]

I agree with Carson’s refrain that we can be the second best Big 12 job. Facilities galore, fans that will rally when you give them a reason. Leave after breakfast and have lunch in DFW. Tradition to play off of.

But established coaches saw a stud come in and turn around the program on a cut rate deal then leave after one year. Whether it was Illinois throwing silly money around or an unfriendly work environment, who knows. But it’s apparently left a taste in mouths and it affected the candidate pool.

OSU and NCAA Notes

No. 3 TCU rallied to beat the Pokes 7-5 in Fort Worth last night….Really impressive conciliatory comments from Gottlieb ….NCAA giving OSU $700k+ – interesting to watch Boynton’s salary against this #?….Big 12 had three guys named All-American by the NABC (no Jawun)

This was incredible last night. That dude takes the shot 100 times, how many times does he knock down the 20 foot runner?

This kiddo just did more credible, impressive journalism work than Thayer did in all his time at SI.

First public appearance from no. 20 looks like it went well.
