Football School

Still processing and making sense of the hire, these words popped out and explained things well.

In 1989-2005, while the basketball Cowboys averaged 23 wins and made 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, the football Cowboys were 80-110-3 and participants in only four bowl games.

Now, as Mike Gundy’s football Cowboys have achieved a national top-10 ranking in seven of the past nine seasons, totaled at least 10 wins in five of the past seven seasons and made 11 consecutive bowl appearances, Boynton inherits a damaged Oklahoma State basketball product.

Since Sutton was nudged into resigning from the OSU job 11 years ago, the Cowboys have an NCAA Tournament record of 1-6. Oklahoma State hasn’t savored an NCAA Tournament victory since March 20, 2009, or a few weeks after Barack Obama first recited the oath of office. [TulsaWorld]

Eddie was the perfect illustration of how you breathe life to a program, an athletic department, a university. He was immediately followed by another alum taking over football who’s done the same thing (albeit with a little help from Les and Boone).

It was such a subtle, slight-of-hand exchange as the spotlight dimmed on America’s rowdiest arena, did a 180-degree flip onto the “I’m a man, I’m 40”, rattlesnake hunting, mullet growing star next door.

It’s interesting that when we were mired in football mediocrity, we weren’t perplexed that we took a shot on an offensive line coach from the Dallas Cowboys (Les Miles). But context is everything. While the basketball program now isn’t in the same zip code as football was then, hiring an assistant coach with no experience is a head-turner. Because of what it just was three coaches ago.

That doesn’t mean Boynton can’t be a great hire, he’s doing the right things for a guy in his situation. But he’s a symbol in a macro-level shift that’s occurred.

RB2 Competition

Here’s an update from competition in spring ball for who backs up Justice:

More than anything Carr is vastly different looking now. He checked in as a freshman at 5-7, 165 pounds and now is 5-7 and 190 pounds. Head coach Mike Gundy has always likes him, but likes that thicker, more muscular and physical frame.

“I’m a little bit more physical when I’m running the ball now,” Carr said. “I’m more physical when I starting running down hill and even when I don’t get the ball.”

This spring the Temple High School product has been holding down the first team reps at running back, but L.D. Brown has also impressed as he has shown some wiggle and escapability to go along with speed. Carr and Brown have similar attributes, meaning the competition is intense and close. [GoPokes $$$]

From tight-roping the sideline to running downhill and being physical? #BodyByGlass infomercial waiting to happen. The amount of Brown’s wiggle is a virtual unknown (as he redshirted last year) but that could be fun to watch.

The incoming freshman will have every chance to compete but Gundy loves to play three backs and improvements in the spring equal more yards in the fall.

OSU and NCAA Notes

Baylor losing a guard to grad transfer…. Rivals thinks the Pokes could challenge for the national title this fall…. The Tom Crean/Archie Miller stories at Indiana are so similar to Ford/Underwood it gave me chills….Don’t mess with make unfavorable calls against Kentucky….Pokes to Mobile is the weirdest road trip in college football this fall….Patriots and Dolphins are out on Mixon

I just picture Coach Boynton getting pumped watching this on repeat before he meets with a high school dude. I dig it too.

Really cool kiddo here (incredible story, appears to have had two heart transplants) hanging out with PGA Cowboys at the Shell Open.

Get your tennis on this weekend.
