Baylor Scandal

Baylor had no choice but to fire Briles based on these six things from the Pepper Hamilton report. [PFB]

Wowza. Baylor got hooked on winning. It stopped caring about the corrosive side effects of recruiting many questionable characters who could ball out on fall Saturdays. It averted its gaze from violent players who raped women, who beat women, who beat other students. It failed to take significant action against those players – sometimes with the help of the local police. It allowed a criminal subculture to exist within a part of its football program. It left their victims feeling helpless and used, collateral damage in the quest for gridiron glory. [Yahoo]

Please, Baylor should not get credit for firing somebody every school in the country would have fired. [ESPN]

Thursday’s firing of football coach Art Briles, demotion of president Ken Starr and sanctioning—whatever that means—of athletic director Ian McCaw didn’t happen because the wealthy alums on the board suddenly decided to stand up and do what’s right. This happened because they had no other conceivable choice. Occasionally, the right thing and the bottom line intersect. [Sports Illustrated]

Forget the current strife. One source told CBS Sports that NCAA enforcement has spent more time on the Baylor campus than any other Big 12 school. [CBS]

May his downfall serve a greater good by becoming a wake-up call to coaches and schools across the country. Yes, there are more important matters than winning, and even someone as wildly successful as Briles must pay the price for neglecting them. [Fox]

This is just the beginning, but on Thursday, Baylor began paying for its sins. No amount of training or speeches can totally eradicate sexual assault for any football program forever, but an administrative cover-up is a systemic issue that demands a change in leadership.  [Sports on Earth]

Bob Bowlsby: “I do think that when one of our schools has problems, it reflects on all of our schools. From that standpoint, I think there’s certainly plenty to think about.” [NewsOK]

This is pretty intense.
