Does Jawun Evans Have a Chance to Be as Good as Marcus Smart?

It seems like a ridiculous statement to suggest that Jawun Evans could turn out to be as good as Marcus Smart, but the dude who knows Smart best doesn’t think it’s all that absurd.

“Some of the passes he makes, it reminds me of Marcus (Smart) so much,” said Forte recently. How he sees things and how he knows what players’ strengths are and where they need the ball at what time. He really sees things develop.”

Leyton Hammonds agreed.

“I’ve seen some spectacular plays already,” Hammonds said. “I tell everyone about the first time I played with him, it was a pickup game during his second day on campus. He threw me a pass and to this day I still don’t know how that ball ended up in my hands.”

Travis Ford does not agree.

“There are (no comparisons between those two). They are two totally different players in style of play, physical manor and a lot of other ways. There are no similarities other than they’re both very talented.”

Smart’s freshman year was a revelation. He averaged 15-6-4-3 while being used in 82 percent of OSU’s total minutes and having a usage rate of nearly 30 (he was the second-most used player in the Big 12 as a freshman … astounding).

Evans likely won’t be that. But he’s going to have to have an All-Big 12 year for OSU to have a shot at making the Dance.

(He) does a lot of things you can’t teach,” said Ford. “His understanding, feel and way he sees the game of basketball is special. It’s not something you see on many basketball courts at any level. He is one of the most unselfish players I’ve been around. He is a freshman, but thank goodness more times than not, he hasn’t looked like one in impact.”
