Jawun Evans’ Talent on Full Display Friday

Published

on

Jawun Evans wasn’t flashy on Friday evening in the Cowboys season opener, but he displayed plenty of the talent that made him one of the most coveted point guards in the country in a 91-57 blowout.

He finished the night with 7 points, 4 assists, 5 rebounds and a steal in 21 minutes. He’s drawn praise throughout his recruiting process and offseason for having a high basketball IQ, and his vision and ability to see a play develop before it develops is going to be invaluable for this team.

One example from last night you can see from this video posted by the basketball twitter page. Evans comes off a high screen set by Anthony Allen, and before he’s through the screen he already has his head up looking for the backdoor cut Jeff Carroll was about to make. Not only did he find him for a perfect pass, but he found him with a beautiful one-handed dish which set him up perfectly.

Another prime example of Evans’ value came on yet another pass to Jeff Carroll in the following sequence. In transition, Evans has excellent vision to see Carroll sneak behind the defender down the court, and again delivers an incredible one-handed dime IN STRIDE for Carroll.

The point guard position won’t always get the credit for some of these big plays, but the two beautiful set-ups are a perfect example of what Evans can bring to the table and what value the Cowboys have in him. He’s going to be a monster and an underrated commodity all season.
