A Look At The Oklahoma State-Texas Tech Drive Charts

Published

on

There were a lot fewer drives in Saturday’s Oklahoma State-Texas Tech game than I though there would be. There were 25 real drives in all. OSU got 12 of them and Tech got 13. Let’s take a look at a few of the key numbers that stood out in OSU’s 45-44 win.

It’s not as clean as maybe you would like against a Texas Tech defense, but 3.75 points per drive is 3.75 points per drive. Here are the other numbers.

  • Yards per play: 9.2
  • Points per drive (offense): 3.75
  • Points per drive (defense): 3.38
  • Points off turnovers: 0
  • Average starting field position: Own 29

OSU once again won the field position game even with the onside kick Tech recovered (#Sinorforever). Its 9.2 yards per play was incredibly impressive as well. OSU has averaged over 9.0 yards per play in a game just nine times in the Gundy era. Two have come in the last week.

Eight of the nine were wins. Somehow the only loss was to Houston when Oklahoma State didn’t even crack the 50-play (!) mark. Also, we own the state of Kansas, apparently.

If you would have told me Tech would recover an onside kick in the fourth quarter and score on two of its three possessions, I would have grimaced and probably thought OSU had fallen at the hands of Coach Bro (which it almost did). But that beginning of the game really killed the Raiders. Punt-punt-punt on 11 total yards. Incredible.

  • Yards per play: 5.4
  • Points per drive (offense): 3.38
  • Points per drive (defense): 3.75
  • Points off turnovers: 7
  • Average starting field position: Own 24

“It definitely hurts,” said QB Patrick Mahomes. “We had a lot of chances to win. They found a way to win. We didn’t. It is kind of like the whole season. But it hurts. We are going to go out there and fight. We have two games to get bowl eligible.”
