My Five Favorite Bedlam Memories in the Mike Gundy Era

Published

on

For the sake of time and research, I thought it would be fun to limit this post to my favorite Bedlam memories of the last 10 years, since Mike Gundy took over in Stillwater. Of course it’s true that my Bedlam memories don’t extend that far beyond the Mike Gundy era which is both 1. helpful to justifying this post and 2. something I’m grateful for as a fan.

Anyway, the majority of these are games (or full days and nights) but a couple are singular plays. Here are my top five since Gundy took over in Stillwater.

1. The one that may never be topped (2011)

It was the greatest for so many reasons. As I watched this video below and thought about the possibility of the goalposts coming down again this Saturday night if TCU wins on Friday night, I finally hit the part of the week where I get more excited about the Bedlam game than any other game of the season.

What a night.

2. The punt return (2014)

This is not a commentary on the morality of Tyreek Hill. That was simply one of the most exciting moments I’ve ever experienced as a sports fan. I was reading through it a little bit earlier this week. You should go back and sort through the 10 thoughts. So many emotions and nuances to that game I forgot about a year later.

3. The Shootout (2010)

I’ll always remember this game for Justin Blackmon dragging his bad leg around Boone Pickens Stadium for four hours in a game for the Big 12 South title.

Oh yeah, and this. Dude was a straight baller.

4. The pick (2010)

This also came in that losing effort of 2010 which was the last time OSU wore the old unis in the regular season. This interception was preposterous in the moment and may be even more so now.

5. The Future Pros night (2008)

Jermaine Gresham vs. Dez Bryant. Sam Bradford vs. Zac Robinson. Kendall Hunter vs. DeMarco Murray. All six went on to play in the NFL and all but Zac I believe are still playing. Brandon Pettigrew, Ryan Broyles and Dan Bailey were all involved as well. OU rolled deeper on defense that year (and every year until recently) but this was the first Bedlam of the Gundy era that made me say, “hmmm … we might have something here eventually.”

And then we did.

Bonus reading: I ranked the last 12 Bedlams a couple of years ago.
