Oklahoma State Leans on Running Game and Turnovers in 44-20 Win Over KU

The Cowboys used turnovers and a blossoming rushing attack to take care of business in Lawrence. Here’s a recap of Saturday’s game.

1st Quarter

The Cowboys started off Saturday off with a run-heavy game plan. Freshman Justice Hill was the workhorse as he helped push the Cowboys on a 62-yard drive that ended with a Zach Sinor punt from the KU 37-yard line.

That first drive: seven rushing attempts to one pass.

KU took over after being pinned at their own 11-yard line and quickly gave their own punter Cole Moos a chance to stretch his leg.

With 8:52 left in the 1st, OSU starts at their own 32-yard line and again is able to move the ball down the field before a sack-fumble at the KU 26 leaves the Cowboys empty-handed again.

Montell Cozart took over after the Rudolph fumble and made the Cowboys pay with a 68-yard touchdown pass, giving the Jayhawks a 7-0 lead.

The Cowboys were able to answer the touchdown with one of their own from Chris Carson’s 1-yard run after a 47-yard pass to Jalen McCleskey got them down the field.

2nd Quarter

The Jayhawks were again able to move the ball down the field before having to settle for a field goal, taking a 10-7 lead.

The Cowboys got the ball but a Rudolph sack for a loss of eight yards put them too far behind the chains to recover and had to punt again.

The Jawhawks stalled on their next drive due to continued penalty issues. Cole Moos shanked a 22-yard punt giving the Cowboys great field position which they unceremoniously turned in Ben Grogan’s record-breaking 3-point score to make him the All-Time leading scorer in OSU history.

Kansas’ next drive ended in another field goal and the Cowboys were able to get a touchdown on their next drive after a 39-yard pass from Mason Rudolph to Jalen McCleskey and then a pass from Austin Hays to Blake Jarwin for 22 yards set up Justice Hill for a touchdown.

The Cowboys were able to go to halftime with a 17-13 lead.

3rd Quarter

The opening drive of the second half ended with a Jayhawk fumble as Vincent Taylor poked the ball away from KU tailback Ke’aun Kinner. The Cowboys were able to turn this good field position into a Chris Carson touchdown pass.

The Jayhawks answered with their own touchdown, sticking around and making it 24-20.

Following an OSU punt, defensive tackle DeQuinton Osborne picked off a pass and returned it all the way to the 1-yard line. Rennie Childs punched it into the end zone on the next play.

Then on the next KU possession, one of the wackiest plays you’re likely to see this year unfolded. After a deep pass was picked off by Jordan Sterns, the senior safety pitched the ball to defensive tackle Vincent Taylor who started trucking down the field. To keep the play going, he pitched it back to defensive end Jarrell Owens who made it all the way to the KU 16-yard line. The Cowboys turned that interception into a Ben Grogan field goal to take a 34-20 lead.

4th Quarter

At the beginning of the 4th quarter, Kansas appeared to still have some life as they made it down to the OSU 5-yard line before before being stopped on downs by the Cowboy defense.

Taking over at their own 4-yard line, the Cowboys moved down field thanks to big plays including a 23-yard Justice Hill run and a 39-yard Rudolph-to-McCleskey connection. Once again, the Cowboys settled for a field goal, pushing the lead to 37-20.

The Cowboys would score again. They Jayhawks were not. Chris Carson’s third touchdown in his first game back from injury gave OSU a 44-20 lead which they would keep.  Mike Gundy sent in Taylor Cornelius with 2:34 remaining after a KU turnover on downs to signal the end of his 99th win as Oklahoma State’s head coach.

Summary

The KU defense took Jame Washington out of the game. OSU’ ability to run the ball kept them in it early and their defenses propensity to take the ball way proved too much to Kansas to overcome. There is plenty of film for the Cowboys to study as they welcome the undefeated West Virginia Mountaineers for Homecoming next week.
