Recruits say the darndest things

Kyle Porter —  January 21, 2013 — 5 Comments

If you read this blog on a regular basis you know how much I love to perpetuate the “recruiting is a crapshoot, what are we doing with our lives” narrative about college football recruiting.

I’m not really trying to do this here, I just wanted to bring you three real quotes from three real Oklahoma State recruits who visited over the weekend. All of them are quite wonderful.

This is from Tre Flowers (Converse, TX):

They like my range, my eyes, my hips.

What do we think about his collarbones?

At Baylor tonight. Tough to live in a world where they could take two of three in hoops/football in back-to-back years.

Hoops

This was pretty sick. (ESPN)

So who calls Ford’s bluff first? Nash probably, right? (NewsOK)

Much to prove, yes. (Tulsa World)

Lengthy, but pretty good, post on the state of OSU hoops. Whetsell does good work. (CRFF)

Agree with Stavenhagen here, Markel Brown might be our best player right now. (O’Colly)

Really like this: OSU players talking about what MLK Day means to them. (NewsOK)

It’s a reminder of what he did for our rights and giving us the opportunity to go to schools like this, just to have the same equal rights. That means a lot to me. So it’s incredible, just for two schools to be going at it on a significant day like that, it just adds to how significant a game it’s going to be and how big a game it’s going to be

10 Thoughts: Texas Tech

BOX SCORE

OSU thumped Tech in Gallagher-Iba today to move to 2-2 in conference and 12-4 overall. The game wasn’t all that exciting but I have a bevy of videos, tweets, and thoughts to liven it up for you.

1. On Smart’s foul trouble in the past few games: what are the odds that I (or someone associated with me) have given money to members of the Big 12′s officiating group to get Smart out of these games so NBA GMs don’t get a good look at him? I mean, pretty absurd, but definitely not off the table, right?

2. This is, um, this is an issue. And I agree with Morris.

3. Pretty subtle move by ESPN to show Keiton right after they did a 30-second promo for Hinkle Fieldhouse. #ollie.

4. A few things on Forte: I think he’s the third best player on this team right now, and I’m not even sure it’s that close. Obviously everyone is in love with his shot but he does so many little things as well.

Prime example: Marcus Smart had a fast-break layup in the second half which, being Marcus Smart, he’s going to make 999 times out of 1,000. Still, there was Forte sprinting to the other end in case he missed…which he did. Forte grabbed the board and got fouled. You can’t teach that stuff……………especially if you’re Travis Ford.

10 Thoughts: West Virginia Wrestling

Nick Isburgh —  January 19, 2013 — 1 Comment

1. Klimara had a huge win tonight from both a team standpoint and from a personal standpoint. Klimara was in deep two times from neutral, but couldn’t convert against the steady wrestling of Shane Young.

Being tied 2-2 going into the third period and down over a minute (:49) on riding time, Klimara rode Young out to capture 1:11 of riding time for a 3-2 victory. Big confidence booster. That match most likely won him a trip to the NCAA tournament and a possible ranking next week.

2. Tyler Dorrell gave the crowd an excitement early in the dual. Down 3-1 going into the third period, he came back and scored a very last second double-from-a-scramble takedown to win 7-6.

He was out of position a lot, and did not look too good going into the third period, but to pull out a victory against a wrestler ranked in the top 25 is just unbelievable. Great win for him and his family.

3. Feikert. Ugh. There goes his season and all hopes of confidence and possibly his chances at an All-American season. He doesn’t look as bad as some other wrestlers, but his confidence has to be in the ditch right now.

He definitely has the ability to win some matches for the Cowboys, but he first needs to get off this grind and find a move he can score with on his feet.

4. Oliver blah blah blah. (Jk) you could tell his opponent had been looking forward to this match forever. He came out with a little pep to his step, but quickly succumbed to a Jordan Oliver onslaught and after attempting to evade a cradle gave it up when he was trying to stand up from bottom and that was that.

5. The Luster- Dieringer matchup was not as exciting as I had hoped it to be. Dieringer hit two fireman’s carries and had two incredible turns to win 11-2. Luster will be a great wrestler, but something about Dieringer tells me, and a lot of fans, that he is going to be one of the all-time greats.

Why You Should Care About Recruiting

Matt Amilian —  January 18, 2013 — 7 Comments

Note:  I began writing this post prior to Pistolsguy’s post yesterday.  Also, when I say you should care about recruiting, I mean from a standpoint that it correlates to on-field production.  If you get emotionally involved in a high school kid’s college decision, I think you need help.

Another Note:  Congrats to Laquon Treadwell on making his college decision.  Of course I was hoping he’d be a Cowboy, but it’s a win any time a guy signs his name on that line to accept a college scholarship offer.

I understand as much as anyone that the number of stars next to a guy’s name isn’t a true representation of his future career.  You don’t need to throw Justin Blackmon at me accompanied with the fact Rivals had him ranked as the 91st best wide receiver (okay…wow) in the 2008 recruiting class. They missed on him. Almost everyone missed on him.

If that’s your case for recruiting rankings being a complete farce, I’ll point out that Julio Jones and AJ Green ranked first and second in that wide receiver class respectively.

You cannot hand select one guy, or even a group of them, to make your argument.  We can go back and forth about guys who panned out (Markelle, Randle, Dez) and guys who didn’t (Reid, Cole, XLK), but neither address recruiting from a team standpoint.

Ten teams have played in the past ten BCS National Championship games:  Alabama, LSU, Auburn, OU, Texas, Southern Cal, Notre Dame, Oregon, Florida and Ohio State.
