Stranger In A Strange Land

This is a guest post from friend of the blog (and former OSU intramural all-star) Cam Hardaway. He’s an entrepreneur at heart and wrote a cool post about how Oklahoma State is like that sexy Silicon Valley startup right now. You can follow him on Twitter at @cambronhardaway.

Cowboy Faithful,

I’m a stranger in a strange land.  One year ago, I moved my wife (a die hard Native Texan) and son (we have two now), to the most obscure of places in the minds of Republicans and meat eaters alike, Silicon Valley — I caught the tech bug.

Google is awesome, Facebook sucks, Jobs lived on Waverly Street and Box is making enterprise software sexy. I love it. The inhabitants of our peninsula are entrepreneurial, ridiculously smart (don’t assume that I am) and ambitious. They also love sports, most competitive people do. Some of the most innovative and disruptive ideas are nurtured and developed here, to be shared (hopefully at a profit) with the entire world (see Twitter).

Companies in the Bay Area come and go — running out of venture capital because their ideas suck or the market opportunity wasn’t as big as originally thought, getting gobbled up by Apple, Microsoft, Oracle or Cisco and in rare feats of accomplishment go public and embark to take over the world!  Which brings me to our alma mater.

Every fan has a propensity for thinking their team gives up the most career days to its opponents.

We’ve been there as OSU fans, everybody’s been there, Baylor’s been there for a long time.

So what really happened in 2012?

Here’s a look at which teams gave up the most Big 12 players of the week this year.

OffenseDefense
Kansas11
Baylor11
Iowa State01
West Virginia53
Texas10
Texas Tech11
Oklahoma State22
TCU01
Kansas State01
OU00

Goodness, West Virginia. From 10/15 to 11/19 they gave up five of the six offensive players of the week. And they had an off week!

They also gave up the most defensive players of the week.

Five Thoughts On The Central Arkansas Game

Kyle Porter —  December 16, 2012 — 1 Comment

Box Score

1. If you were sitting around this holiday season wondering what Big Nasty has been up to since his 1994 national title and subsequent NBA career, you now have your answer — coaching the honey badgering-ist team in small college hoops. They should call it “40 minutes of purgatory.”

2. There were two huge runs in the first half: first Central Arkansas went on a 22-11 streak to open the game, then OSU responded with a 29-4 spot that essentially put the Bears away. The Cowboys put on a defensive clinic during this streak too — and considering the ineptitude of the halfcourt offense, this is going to be what defines their Big 12 season.

3. One thing that scares me — OSU’s transition interior defense and rebounding. When teams run sets I have confidence in the ability of Jurick and Cobbins to protect the rim and get boards. On the run with fast-paced teams…not so much.

Which Big 12 Offense Was Best?

David Ubben posed the question yesterday on his Big 12 blog. There are a number of ways to look at this but the title of “best offense in the Big 12″ definitely belongs to one of the following five schools: Baylor, KSU, OSU, OU, and WVU.

First, let’s rid ourselves of the archaic points per game metric when looking at best offenses. Oklahoma State does not necessarily have a better offense than Alabama because they score 20 or 30 more points per game. That’s dumb and outdated.

The true measure of a great offense is how efficient you are when you get the ball.

For example, if you get 1,000 possessions in a season and score 200 TDs but punt 800 times, you’d set the NCAA record for points scored, but you were ridiculously inefficient in doing it. And since other teams get the same amount of possessions (roughly) as you, you probably went 0-12. Plus, your punter needs a leg replacement and those are expensive.

So to answer the question about which offense was most efficient, let’s dig into the numbers.
