Four year basketball rankings

When the football season ended, we ranked every football program in the country using a four-year formula. Let’s do the same thing for hoops to see where our program stands.

Once again, I’m using the what-have-you-done-for-me-lately formula:

2013 season: 40% weighting
2012: 30%
2011: 20%
2010: 10%

I figure recruits tend to look at programs this way…everything beyond four years ago is a distant memory to an 18-year old.

I’ll use Pomeroy’s ratings.

First, let’s look at the top 20:

Not trying to be Debbie Downer here but on the defense: I’ll believe it when I see it. (NewsOK)

This is a real quote from a real OSU player: They could just draw something out of a bucket of who quarterback we’re going to start. (AP)

Gundy on the D: I just want to be more aggressive on defense and I don’t necessarily mean blitzing. But over the last couple years I haven’t been happy with the way we approach the game on defense and the way that we defended the passing game. (AP)

I would say we would miss Randle too, but I also thought we’d miss Bell, Morency, and Kendall. And I was wrong every time. (Scout)

I kind of fall asleep in practice now. (Tulsa World)

Good point by Jenni (I know…) here, OSU is going to be picked to win the Big 12 title without a starting QB. (NewsOK)

We got a recruit from Oklahoma! (ESPN Insider)

Roundtable Friday: are we more excited about football or hoops?

osu2013

We haven’t done this in a while but with Marcus Smart’s decision on Wednesday we wanted to go another round with Roundtable Friday. Today’s question: are we more excited about football next year or hoops?1

OKC Dave

It has to be basketball. Football will be fun. We have a lot to look forward to this season. But we’re not going to challenge for the national championship in football. At best, we’ll lose a game or two and be in the mix for a conference championship – certainly something to be excited about in Stillwater, Oklahoma. But I think that’s our ceiling (prove me wrong, boys!).

Smart & company are unequivocally going to be the favorite to win the Big 12 and will be in several pre-season Final Fours. This is the most anticipated OSU basketball season since 2004-05. Being excited about basketball does not diminish my excitement for the football season at all – but if we happen to drop a football game at home this year, as you stumble back to your tailgate all you have to do is glance to the east and gaze upon GIA to lift your spirits.

Updating the QB races in the Big 12. (ESPN)

Yurcich on Walsh/Chelf/Lunt: They’re great in the meeting room. I had them over to the house last week. My sons enjoyed them very much and my wife enjoyed them very much. They’re three very nice young men. (O’Colly)

So it’s Tracy Moore’s fault Justin Gilbert was terrible last year? (NewsOK)

Holder on the practice facilities: Our fanbase has been very generous. When you have passionate, loyal, generous fans, it gives you a lot of options. (Tulsa World)

Barry Sanders vs. AD. (ESPN)

I think a lot of you are getting a glimpse of why these guys are wanting to come back. This is something you just don’t get every day. This is not something you get as a part of your life all the time — to be a part of a team that’s as close as this and has had as much fun as these guys have. (O’Colly)

Awesome.

Marcus Smart talks to Doug Gottlieb

It’s really good, especially the stuff Gottlieb says after Smart gets off the phone. He talks about how much he loves Stillwater, hoops, etc. Must listen.

10 thoughts on the Marcus Smart decision

I usually default to “10 thoughts” when there are too many things floating around for me to settle on one angle for a blog post and today’s OSU presser was no different.

There was SO much happening and so much said that I wanted to give you a special offseason version of the 10 thoughts.

Here we go..

1. Marcus Smart is ridiculously mature for being a freshman in college. I have no proof of this, of course, I don’t know him and I only know a few people who do know him (nonewell) but to speak candidly in a press conference about openly knowing you’re giving up $8 million in guaranteed money to return to school because I love you guys and I’m a Cowboy at heart is absurd. You’re 19, you’re not supposed to make life-changing decisions with such poise and ease!

2. Le’Bryan opened with this was one of the hardest decisions of my life. My question with this: was it because he couldn’t figure out when the deadline was or because he actually considered going pro? And is he the least self-aware OSU athlete in the history of the school?

3. Travis Ford could not stop smiling. It was unbelievable. I think he wore two pairs of pants because he was scared he was going to urinate all over himself on stage in front of a couple thousand other humans. He said I was excited because he was excited but what he meant was my gosh, how did this happen to me? I couldn’t even get these dudes out of the first round!

Marcus Smart returns, in his own words

Kyle Porter —  April 17, 2013 — 5 Comments

Marcus Smart did the unthinkable on Wednesday — he turned down $8 million in guaranteed money to return to Stillwater, Oklahoma for his second year of basketball under Travis Ford.

Here’s what he had to say on Wednesday at his press conference:

I love you guys and I’m a Cowboy at heart, so it looks like I’ll be coming back for my sophomore year.

I am aware of how much money I’m giving up. A 19 year old kid with that kind of money. It’s a lot of money.

I just followed my heart. This is where it’s at.

Here’s Nash and Markel too:
