Results – First Annual PFB Reader’s Baseball Awards
And the awards go to…
The results are in for the First Annual PFB Reader’s Baseball Awards. Here’s who you all voted for, along with my selections:
Season MVP
PFB Results:
Brendan McCurry – 47 (33.6%)
Zach Fish – 45 (32.1%)
Donnie Walton – 29 (20.7%)
Vince Wheeland – 19 (13.6%)
My Pick:
I’m actually going with Fish for this one. The Big 12 MVP was top 10 in the conference in hits, doubles, homers, RBIs, total bases and slugging percentage. Quite impressive.
Silver Slugger
PFB Results:
Zach Fish – 90 (71.4%)
Donnie Walton – 24 (19.0%)
Tanner Krietemeier – 11 (8.7%)
Conor Costello – 1 (0.8%)
My Pick:
Fish again. He led the team in doubles, home runs, total bases and slugging percentage.
Cy Young
PFB Results:
Brendan McCurry – 60 (51.7%)
Vince Wheeland – 44 (37.9%)
Jon Perrin – 11 (9.5%)
Blake Battenfield – 1 (0.9%)
My Pick:
Hard to disagree with this pick. McCurry broke three OSU records this year and was dominant in the 9th inning. I don’t believe he blew a save all season.
Freshman of the Year
PFB Results:
Blake Battenfield – 70 (64.8%)
Tyler Buffett – 22 (20.4%)
Dustin Williams – 8 (7.4%)
Garrett Williams – 8 (7.4%)
My Pick:
This one was too easy. Battenfield in a landslide.
Best OSU Career
PFB Results:
Vince Wheeland – 50 (47.6%)
Brendan McCurry – 37 (35.2%)
Zach Fish – 17 (16.2%)
Tanner Krietemeier – 1 (1.0%)
My Pick:
This was the most difficult pick. McCurry put the single-season saves record where it won’t be touched for a while, but Wheeland’s four-year career gets the slight edge. He was the complete package at pitcher. He could come in with the bases loaded and get out of the jam. He could pitch six innings of relief if you needed it, and even made some spot starts when needed.
Play of the Year
PFB Results:
Regional Triple Play – 56 (57.7%)
Walton’s Barehanded Grab – 35 (36.1%)
Arakawa’s Walkoff Win – 5 (5.2%)
Sluder’s Diving Catch – 1 (1.0%)
My Pick:
No-brainer. A triple play by itself would have won, but to get it in a Regional – not to mention the complete momentum swing it brought with it – well, that’s just too sweet.
