Three Questions With Kansas: How Good Is Josh Jackson?

Published

on

Thanks again to KU writer Andy Mitts of  Rock Chalk Talk, a great blog if you’re looking to learn more about the Jayhawks.
1. This team has an unusually large veteran core led by Frank Mason and Landen Lucas to go with the usual young blue chip talent in Joshua Jackson and Carlton Bragg. What are things this team does really well and things that other teams have tried to exploit?
The perimeter is the obvious strength of this team.  The Jayhawks have what is arguably the best PG duo in the nation in Frank Mason and Devonte’ Graham to work with the freshman phenom Josh Jackson, and Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk (Svi) and Lagerald Vick provide quality depth.
The main liability has been the frontcourt. Landen Lucas has turned back into the major threat down low that he was last year, but with the loss of Udoka Azubiuke to a wrist injury, there hasn’t been any consistent help down low for him. Carlton Bragg has that potential, but he is still working to try and live up to it.
2. What match ups are you most looking forward to in Saturday’s game between the Cowboys and Jayhawks?
I think Frank Mason vs Jawun Evans is going to be really exciting. Evans is clearly the star for OSU, and Mason is a lock-down defender who has really found his offense this year. Mason is a frontrunner for national player of the year, and Evans is likely to join him on the All-Big 12 First Team this season. It should be a fascinating matchup.
3. Tell us about freshman-phenom Joshua Jackson. Who does he compare to in your mind and what things does he do well?
I always hate doing comps like this, but he really does remind me a lot of Andrew Wiggins (who happens to be an excellent comp according to KenPom), except that his shooting touch isn’t quite the same.  He’s been excellent with his passing, and while he can create his own shot as needed, he really shines when he can help facilitate other’s offense.  He won’t put up anywhere near the stats that Wiggins did, but there is a lot more talent surrounding Jackson.
