Throwback Thursday: When Oklahoma State Torched RG3 and Baylor

It’s Baylor week so we might as well throw it back to one of my favorite games of the Mike Gundy era. The 2011 Baylor game in which OSU lit Bobby G. on fire and jumped out to a 49-3 lead before calling off the dogs late. Some stats:

  • Weeden: 24/36 for 274 yards and 3 TD
  • Randle: 14 for 152 yards and 4 TD
  • Blackmon: 13 for 172 yards and 2 TD
  • Griffin: 33/50 for 425 yards and 2 INT

It was also the famous Justin Gilbert “slingshot” game in which the soon-to-be Heisman winner appeared to be complaining about how fast Gilbert was. Here’s John Helsley from the Oklahoman.

Griffin said Gilbert deployed a common trick called “slingshotting” where cornerbacks grab a receiver and slyly pull them forward.

“He just did it sly enough that the ref didn’t see it or the ref saw it and thought it was funny, I don’t know,” Griffin told the Oklahoman. “When we bring the play in, I’m thinking, ‘Here we go.’ I see (receiver Terrance Williams), I see his numbers, he’s wide open. The ball’s thrown, all I see is No. 4 (Gilbert). That doesn’t happen naturally.”

Justin Gilbert was not a natural college football player.

“They play hard,” Griffin continued. “You can’t take that away from them. Today, there were some times, it’s not like there was a big hit, the ball just squirted out. I guess you could say it’s fortune, good luck. But they’re the No. 3 team in the nation, so obviously luck’s been on their side all year.

Also there was this gem from Weeden.

Take the first of two fade-to-Blackmon touchdowns that Weeden threw. It was a fourth-and-1 play in the first half, and Monken sent in a running play. Weeden had every intention to hand it off, get the yard and move the chains.

“Eh,” he thought as he took the snap, “I think I’m just gonna throw it.”He lofted one of those familiar fades into the corner of the end zone and connected with Justin Blackmon. “We threw it,” Weeden said. “We got it.” He shrugged. “It was just that easy.”

Here are three pretty terrific GIFs from that game.

Also, don’t watch the full cinematic highlights if you don’t want to get nostalgic for that 2011 team. Whoo boy, what a squad.
