When It Comes to the Important Things, Travis Ford Gets It

We can talk about his road conference record. We can talk about how he hasn’t recruited well in his eight years at the helm. We can talk about how he couldn’t finish in the top six in the Big 12 with Marcus Smart and two other future pros. What we can’t talk about when it comes to Travis Ford is him not understanding the fabric of Oklahoma State’s hoops history. Every year he impresses me with the depth of his sorrow and passion for the 10 who died on January 27, 2001.

“I think it’s very important that they understand what happened and understand the people who were involved, who it was,” Ford told the Oklahoman. “Remember The Ten… they are a part of this basketball program, always will be, a very important part of this basketball program. We want our players to know that, and we honor them in every way possible.”

“I think in today’s society, kids live in the present and they don’t realize what came before them sometimes. And what set the precedent of this basketball program,” Ford said. “And that’s a big part of the history of this basketball program.”

Man, that’s good stuff (and if you listen to his players, you realize they get it, too). It would be easy for Ford to forget or shove this aside and tuck it into the bowels of GIA. But every year … every single year … he runs it out there for his players, for us and maybe for himself. Travis Ford might not win as many basketball games as we would like him to win, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been good for his players.
