Series Preview: A&M

Photo Attribution: Flickr: bjoelio

When: Tonight – 6:30 PM, Friday – 6:30 PM, Saturday – 1 PM

Where: Allie P. Stadium in Stillwater

Big 12 Standings:

Baylor – 18-3
A&M – 13-8
Texas – 13-8
Oklahoma State 13-8
OU – 13-10 (one game against KU cancelled, finished with Big 12 schedule)

What’s at Stake: A top four finisher in the Big 12 has never missed the NCAA Tournament. Even though the Big 12 is a little down this season, unless OSU gets swept and falls below OU in the standings, they should be safely in. So, don’t get swept.

Pitching Matchups: Tonight is going to be a classic. You guys know the Andrew Heaney story – probable top 15 pick, second in the country in Ks, two-time Big 12 pitcher of the week, but A&M counters with their own blue-chip prospect in Michael Wacha.

In its latest draft projections, Baseball America had Wacha going #14 to the Reds, one pick before Heaney. The two have combined to go 16-1 with 215 Ks and five shutouts on the year. Translation: if you show up 30 minutes late, be prepared to do the 7th inning stretch.

Report Cards – Part 2

PART 1

It’s also time for some end of the school year report cards for your OSU athletes and coaches. We’ll be doling these out gently and spreading them out over the next week (so we don’t have to look at all the basketball ones at once).

Le’Bryan Nash - Statistically it’ll go down as one of the five best freshman seasons in school history*. He averaged a 13-5-2-1-0 (points-boards-assists-steals-blocks) and shot 39%/73%/24% (FG/FT/3P) but it always felt like there was something missing. Like he had another gear that he never could find.

Like he was playing as the 25th or 35th best freshman in the country, not the 5th. There’s something there though, and you know we’re all going to be back in late October to see what, if anything, it is.

Mike Gundy - Drew within three wins of the all-time Oklahoma State record by a coach, set in motion the first BCS team in school history, and capped it off with a $1.6M raise. We were a live hair-gelling session on national television away from the first A+ from an OSU coach since Eddie took Tony Allen and Co. to the Final Four in 2004.

Weekend Update

Photo Attribution: US Presswire

OSU activities on non-football weekends tend to get a little lost here on the blog so I wanted to bring everyone up to speed on a few things you might have missed while getting some well-deserved R&R at the beach..

The baseball team swept lowly Alcorn State to complete a 4-1 week headed into the season’s last two series’ (at DBU on Tuesday and home for A&M Thursday-Saturday). Andrew Heaney went the distance on Friday night, running his record to 8-1 with an obscene 1.59 ERA and 120 Ks in 102 innings. The K mark is tops in the Big 12 and second in the country.

Saulyer Saxon and Trey Whaley both collected five knocks on the weekend and Saxon is hitting a toasty .405 since becoming the starting center fielder at Kansas State two weeks ago after Jarrett Higgins was injured on the Wildcats’ ridiculous all-turf infield.

The ending to the softball season was very much a microcosm of the season. The Cowgirls lost in heartbreaking fashion (1-0 in 10 innings) and just one year removed from going to the WCWS will not be participating in postseason play.

Also, while we’re here, I find it odd that 1.) there’s no Big 12 softball tournament (what’s up with that??) and 2.) Iowa State has a softball team but no baseball team. Can you tell I did all my research for this bit in the last nine minutes?! Let’s move along!
