30 Percent of OSU Fans Think Bob Stoops Is a Better Coach Than Mike Gundy

The comments were just basically if you lit a bunch of fire on fire with more fire and poured gasoline over the entire thing (which I knew they would be). Still, I thought this was an interesting look at the Gundy vs. Stoops debate. To those of you who tweeted that it was stupid to toss this question to a bunch of OSU fans because I would get biased answers, uh, don’t @ me. I was simply curious how many OSU fans agreed with me about which man is better at coaching college football.

I wrote earlier in the week that Bob Stoops might be a better coach (I believe he is) but Mike Gundy is more memorable and more endearing. I like Gundy better. I’d rather him be the coach of my team even though I’m not totally convinced he’s as good.

Both sides have an argument here too. Stoops walked into a situation where recruiting 5-star guys is easy. Gundy built up a program where the only tradition came with him at the helm at QB. On the other hand, OU wasn’t exactly mid-2000s Florida when Stoops took over, and Gundy has gotten the benefit of Boone Pickens’ dough. Stoops has won more games. Gundy has won more games per recruiting stars on his roster than maybe any coach in college football history.

The debate is a good one (and a fun one if you don’t take it or yourself too seriously), but I guess at the end of the day I land in the camp that it’s a lot harder to sustain the type of excellence Stoops has sustained than most people think. It’s tough to climb the mountain (like Gundy has which has been impressive), but it’s insanely difficult to not fall off the other side (see: Brown, Mack and Malzahn, Gus). Stoops hasn’t, and I have to credit him for that.

Even Gundy said this a few years ago.

“The reason that happens is because of what we build up,” Gundy told ESPN. “There’s going to be a time when people are pressing and demand a lot from us. We have created this monster. Now we have to feed it.”

Some of you (at least a few of you) had compelling things to say on both sides of this. Here are the results followed by some of the better comments.

Derek Spivey: MG does more with less. No doubt in my mind we would dominate with the talent they have across the board.

Grant Wilson: Stoops pretty easily, and I’m an OSU guy. I’d be fascinated to see what Gundy could do at a blueblood school though.

Jeremy Rooks: Gundy only because of the talent input to talent output ratio. It’s not even close in head to head as we all know.

Jason Sutton: Bob Stoops is the better coach. The fact that OU has beaten OSU in years where OSU should have won is all the evidence I need. Never mind all the Big 12 titles Stoops has won. I feel like Bob prepares his players better and they consistently play harder.

Sonny: There is something to be said for the fact that Stoops took over a well established program while Gundy has built up it’s little brother. This muddies the water a little. I honestly couldn’t say who the better coach is, nor do I know if anybody could. It’s all subjective to opinion based on perception.

David Einstein: Stoops, but Gundy can pass him with a couple of playoff appearances.
