A Look at How Oklahoma State 2016 Recruits Fared in Last Week’s High School Games

High school football is starting up in the Midwest which means current Oklahoma State commits are out showing off their stuff. It was a rough week for a few, a star performance for one and just another day in the office for another. Take a look;

AJ Green and LaDarren Brown, Desoto (TX)

Desoto had a rough outing on national TV when it hosted Arlington Lamar. At the half, Desoto failed to light up their side of the board and were down by 19. Brown had a slight injury in the first quarter but was able to return in the middle of the second. He recorded 28 yards on 9 carries behind a line that looked defeated for most of the game.

The deficit at the half would have been larger had AJ Green not picked off a pass in the end zone that was juggled by the wide receiver. The second half yielded 16 points after an improved passing game, helped by a 46 yard reception by Brown. Green ended with 4 tackles after Martin went to the ground game to preserve their lead but wasn’t tested in the passing game much.

Final Score: Desoto 16 Martin 49

Nick Starkel, Liberty Christian (TX)

Starkel and his team came out excited, but might have had too many jitters to execute plays properly. Like Desoto, Liberty went scoreless in the first half of the game. Starkel was 8 of 13 but only produced 62 yards against the Celina Defense. The second half only got worse for Starkel as he would only complete 5 of his next 20 passes. Many passes were just off the finger tips or dropped by the receiver. Starkel would end the game mustering up 196 yards and 3 touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough.

Final Score: Liberty Christian 20 Celina 35

Devin Harper, Karns (TN)

Harper, a linebacker commit, had a massive performance on the other side of the ball. Karns’ runs a spread offense but needed a change after having problems in their first game. This opened the door for a full on power running game against South-Doyle and Harper took advantage. On only 25 carries, Harper torched the field for 345 yards and reached pay dirt 4 times. Devin also played linebacker in the game recording a forced fumble and fumble recovery as part of his 4 tackles on the night.

Final Score: Karns 48 South-Doyle 28

Side notes: This was Karns’ first win since the middle of their 2013 season, ending a 13 game losing streak and is the 3rd win in the last 33 games. There was also a fight in the 4th quarter of the game which gave 4 Karns’ players (including Harper) one game suspensions.

Madre Harper, Arlington Lamar (TX)

Harper looked like a veteran cornerback in a close game against Richland. They threw away from him most of the night because of nice coverage. He ended with 3 tackles and only allowed a couple of receptions while playing in a prevent defense to preserve the lead. Madre also made a few nice plays on special teams where he acted as the gunner.

Final Score: Lamar 30 Richland 29
