A Basketball Recruiting Update on Trae Young and New Offers

Published

on

Brad Underwood has been busy on the recruiting front. July marks the end of the recruiting calendar for hoops recruiting, and yesterday marked the start of the second of three evaluation periods for July. Underwood has wasted no time getting out some feelers this week and is, once again, hitting the trail to see some of his guys. Here’s some of his latest recruiting activity:

New Offer to 2017 Forward Hasahn French

French, a three-star forward who plays for the NYC area PSA Cardinals, is an extremely undervalued prospect. He’s a 6-7, 225-pound forward who made a big showing at the recent Peach Jam event in Georgia — where Memphis and OSU have since offered.

Just a three-star prospect, French has 25 scholarship offers and is flying under the radar for one simple reason: His supporting cast. He’s teammates with Mohamed Bamba (Five-star, 6-11 Power Forward) and Quade Green (Five-star point guard). They get a ton of the attention, but Underwood likes French and probably has better chances. French is a physically dominating presence who plays with a chip on his shoulder, and with his 6-7 frame, has a really good ball-handling ability and can get to the room with ease.

A Trae Young Update

Easily the best prospect in the state of Oklahoma, 2017 point guard Trae Young, made waves on the circuit with his stellar performance at Peach Jam and helped lead his team to the Peach Jam title. He’s stood out on the circuit and has improved his shooting (which was already great), and is still getting the full court press by Kentucky, Kansas and OU.

Per Adam Zagoria, Young has slowly been cutting his list (past his top 11), and OSU remains in the mix as a “dark horse.”

His final list will reportedly have “5 or 6 schools” — and I expect OSU will make that final cut.

New offer to 2018 F Zac Watson

Oklahoma State offered 2018 small forward Zac Watson recently, according to Watson’s twitter account.

Watson now holds offers from Texas Arlington, Tulsa, Rice, and OSU — So the Cowboy offer was a big one for the Frisco native. Recruiting services have not evaluated him, although one service ranks him a two-star prospect. Just more proof that, although Underwood has certainly proven he’s willing to chase the big fish, he also trusts him and his staffs evaluations well before the hype reaches a player.
