Bedlam’s Recent History Has Decided a Lot of Big 12 Titles

Remember 2009 Bedlam? For your sake, I hope you don’t. That was the last truly atrocious Bedlam game we’ve seen. The one where Brandon Weeden probably should have been playing over Zac Robinson because of injury and I looked up the record for punts in a game halfway through the second quarter.

Yeah, it was bad.

Every Bedlam since then, though? Awesome. They’ve also almost all had Big 12 title implications.

2010: OU wins Big 12 title 47-41 in Stillwater
2011: OSU wins Big 12 title 44-10 in Stillwater
2012: OU wins share of Big 12 title 51-48 in Norman (and hangs a banner)
2013: OU denies OSU Big 12 title 33-24 in Stillwater
2014: No Big 12 title implications
2015: OU gets Big 12 title with a win, OSU with a win and a Baylor loss to TCU or Texas

“Every time I’ve played them, it’s come down to the last minute or overtime,” Kevin Peterson told ESPN. “It’s going to be Bedlam and a Big 12 title is probably going to be on the line as well.”

Mike Gundy seemed equally pumped about the biggest game of the season.

“There’s a lot of excitement about GameDay being here on campus,” said Gundy on Monday. “Obviously, it’s a festive atmosphere here when we have Bedlam on campus and when the biggest show in college football comes to Stillwater. We’ll try to stay focused on the task at hand. The good news is that everyone in the state will be excited about the game this week, and I can’t imagine that our players won’t stay focused, prepare and play well on Saturday.

“The advantage of having Bedlam is that there’s a lot of excitement and enthusiasm generated because of the game. Fortunately, over the last six to eight years, there has been a lot at stake with Bedlam, even more than it’s been over the last 30 or 40 years.”

He’s right about that. Go back even further past 2009 to 2008 and OU won another Big 12 South title in Stillwater (which led to a Big 12 title as well as this …)

Yeah, Bedlam’s recent history has been spectacular and Saturday should be no different.
