Big 12 Golf Update

Published

on

Not to…um…jinx this or anything, but OSU is routing the field at the Big 12 golf championships. I guess that’s what happens when your best player (and #1 amateur in the world) is playing well and struggling to keep pace with the rest of his teammates.

The Cowboys broke the single round score record (270) and three round total score record (845) on Tuesday. Both of those records were also set on par-70 courses (the single round score of 272 was held by OSU from 2000 when they finished second). All that to say, it’s looking a lot like the 5th Big 12 Championship in a row is coming back to Heritage Hall.

In fact, they played so well on Tuesday that the guy who’s in second place in the entire tournament (Kevin Tway) couldn’t even post a score that counted towards his team’s total (scores are only recorded for the lowest four golfers in a given round and he shot a 71).

Put it this way, Texas A&M, which is currently in second place would have to replicate their near-career day yesterday where they got within three strokes of the old single round scoring record (272) and everybody for OSU would have to shoot 2-over or worse for A&M to even have a chance.

In other words, it’s over.

(Ryan Cameron is going to burn my apartment down when Uihlein and Tway card dueling 80s and Jordan Russell chips in on 18 for an A&M win)

So with Hoffman and Tway running away with this thing and OSU out to its safe (fingers crossed) 12-stroke margin over Texas A&M, let’s look at some all-time Big 12 Championship records that are in play today:

Low 72-hole score (1133) – Those aforementioned +2s from everyone would get it done here.
Largest margin of victory (20) – Probably a bit out of reach, but not out of the question.
Most players in the top 5 (3) – And if Taylor Gooch (currently in 8th) plays well at all it’ll be Uihlein on the outside looking in.
Most players in the 60s for a single round (3) – Broke this one yesterday.
Low 72-hole score (individual – 276) – Morgan Hoffman needs a 68 today to break his own record.

As always, feel free to lambaste me via Twitter in about 6 hours because I blew this for everyone…
