Brandon Averette Explains OSU Commitment

Brad Underwood nabbed his first commitment of his tenure at OSU on Tuesday night, earning a verbal pledge from 5-11 point guard Brandon Averette.

Averette, a former Stephen F. Austin signee, opened up his recruitment recently and was released from his letter of intent just this past week.

So when did Oklahoma State establish contact with him?

“As soon as I decommitted,” Averette said. “They were all over me. They have always believed I was a Big 12 point guard.”

His only scholarship offer came from SFA during Underwood’s tenure, and Oklahoma State joined the mix to become his only Power Five offer.

It’s pretty clear the lack of attention on the recruiting stage has only fueled his fire as a sleeper prospect from Richardson, Texas.

“Yeah, it’s probably my biggest motivation (being underrated),” Averette said. “Me being slept on is the reason I’m so passionate and dedicated to getting better at the game,” he continued. “That’s something I will have with me wherever I go.”

There’s a documentary on his high school career that names Averette as “the most underrated player in Texas.”

Only time will tell if he’s as underrated as some believe, but there’s no denying that both the coaches and Averette himself have a genuine belief that he can become as productive a player in the Big 12 as he was in high school. In Averette, the Cowboys are getting a very motivated individual who was one of DFW’s top scorers last season with over 22 per game, and has excellent vision as a floor general. Regardless of whether the scoring production translates to the next level, Averette brings a very skilled presence to the backcourt with good handles and a slashing presence that should compliment Jawun Evans very nicely.
