Closer Look: New White-White-Orange Uniform

Published

Welcome back to our closer look at some of the new uniform combinations OSU will wear this season. As always, graphic have been provided by Chris Knox. On to the commentary.

This is a good example of a combo of why I am somewhat hesitant of the switch to black numbers on the away jersey. I love that we are mixing it up because it will look great with anything black, gray, and white. However, the classic look of white-white-orange doesn’t flow as well as it does here as it did with the orange numbers.

This makes me think that the white helmet with the black stripe and black brand logo is the new default helmet (which we all seem to love).

This combo reminds me of playing NCAA Football (RIP) in college.[1.I hooked up our T1 modem in the Frat house to my PS2 and played the earliest form of online play. Then I knew what Benjamin Franklin must have felt when he discovered electricity.] When picking your uniform, you could mix & match helmets, jerseys and pants from all eras. Like this combo:

  • 2000s helmet
  • 2016 jersey
  • 2016 pants

Not what I would have chosen back in the day. While we’re here…playing NCAA with OSU back in those days wasn’t fun until Bobby Reid got a huge rating after his freshman year. He was AWESOME on the game. Vince Young Lite.

Anyway, not a fan of this combo. Southwell is right: The orange pants don’t go well with the new black numbers. That’s a concern moving forward because the orange pants are the best single piece in the entire uni arsenal.

I like the white top and orange pants here, and I think it could look pretty awesome with, say the icy white helmet or the black chrome Pete (and I don’t even love the icy white or black chrome helmets).

But I’m with everyone else in thinking the old white helmet doesn’t look all that great with this. The white jersey might be the the new top I’m most excited to see on TV though. Potential for it to be an all-time single piece with the numbers that pop and the collar.
