Yeah, who needs a nice Student Union or classrooms for the students to use? Let’s build a shiny new baseball stadium.
Are we talking about the same pool of money here, as far as baseball vs. Union/classrooms? Didn’t the Student Union just get redone? How are the classrooms (I haven’t seen a classroom in 9 years)?
I was being facetious. Of course we should use money to upgrade the classrooms and SU and other buildings that are used on a daily basis by the students instead of taking that money and spending it on a new baseball stadium. Maybe if Holliday comes in, has success and the current stadium can’t hold the fans, we can look at building the stadium. But why spend that money to appease the 20-30 people in the baseball department when the stadium is only half-filled? That’s a generous estimate of attendance at that.
Yeah, I actually meant to comment without replying directly to someone, as someone else mentioned the SU. I actually don’t follow baseball that much, so I don’t have a lot emotionally invested. I was actually curious about the state of the Student Union. We can always use classroom renovations, but I didn’t know if some of them were becoming dilapidated or not, so I asked as an alumni interested in the state of things. In general though, it seems that you can get many excited to build a stadium aren’t excited to put money toward classrooms. That’s not an indictment or approval, just how it is.
Oops, the singular is alumnus.
As far as I know, the classrooms were in pretty good shape; though there are some that could use an upgrade, they aren’t horrible by any means. Classroom building, NRC the ground floor of physical science and North Classroom building are all fine. Engineering South/North, Life Science West/East, Gunderson and Morrill could all use the money to be upgraded. The Union wasn’t in disrepair but you could definitely tell it was a 70s design with a 90s facade. They took the existeing layout and tried to hide it by putting walls up to hide the overall problem, but it was still there. The union had a bunch of odd corners and was difficult to pass through in my opinion. The new union was definitely overdue and I’m glad they took the time and money to upgrade it. It is a huge tool to get future students.
Long time PF reader and I love the it but sorry, I completely disagree with you KP about the Union money being moved for Baseball.
Regular, non-athletically gifted students deserve a piece of the pie. To be honest, I would rather see those plans for the new business building come to life than a new baseball stadium. T Boone did a really good job helping start the $1 Billion campaign and the University did an even better job to make sure students and teachers alike get some of that money, we deserve it (even if I won’t get a nice shiny scholarship, it’s the thought that counts).
Besides, It’s not like the world’s greatest union was falling apart at the seams. There were some definite problems and I am very, VERY happy to see this renovation take place.
It’s a shame that Josh couldn’t have taught RA how to speak or write also. That article was not easy to read.
The article by Terry Pluto (Plain Dealer)also had some good things to say about Josh Cooper.
Wow. Saying we should have used Student Union money for the baseball stadium is one of the dumbest things you’ve ever said, Kyle… and you’ve had your fair share of dumb comments.
I’m so sick of the facilities excuse anyways. How are Stony Brook’s facilities?
Do we need new baseball facilities? Yeah, but it’s not the main reason the program has sufferred.
