What the dead period means for OSU recruiting

The last recruiting calendar update we gave was a deep dive on the significance of June 15 and 2018 hoops prospects. And less than two weeks later, June 27 marks yet another milestone on the recruiting calendar — this time for football recruiting.

Starting June 27 through July 10, 2016, football recruiting is on what is deemed a dead period. Where most times during the calendar year coaches are allowed to make visits, host prospects on campus, or meet in a formal manner, this is not allowed in the dead period. The only form of contact allowed during this time is by letter/e-mail or by phone.

This summer dead period is wrapped around what the NCAA calls a “quiet period”, which began June 1 and will conclude July 31 2016.

Here’s what the quiet period is, defined, per NCAA.com:

During a quiet period, a college coach may only have face-to-face contact with college-bound student-athletes or their parents on the college’s campus.  A coach may not watch student-athletes compete (unless a competition occurs on the college’s campus) or visit their high schools. Coaches may write or telephone college-bound student-athletes or their parents during this time.

Thanks to the NCAA’s somewhat stringent recruiting schedule, most coaches hit the road after spring practice, because of the limited time allowed on the road to see prospects face-to-face. Football recruiting dead period (June 27-July 10) also means that, although there is a possibility that new commitments may happen, it’s likely that through July 10 the football recruiting may go “radio silent”. But even with a dead period, coaches will still be working behind the scenes with the limited forms of communication they’re allowed. For the next two weeks, there won’t be any big prospects visiting campus, but it will be interesting to see what moves OSU makes behind the scenes that makes an impact on the recruiting landscape.
