Film Study: Baylor Locked in on J.W. Walsh Which Spelled Disaster for OSU

Here OSU has Walsh in at QB. Mike & Mike are doing whatever they can to get the run game going. My problem with this is OSU is trying to attack the strength of Baylor’s defense. Keep Rudolph in, throw a three-yard out to Glidden.

Anyway, OSU is lined up with two WR to the right, single WR to the left and two backs. Baylor knows exactly what’s coming their way.

OSU is running a QB Zone read, which means the entire line is blocking to the right with the RG pulling back towards the left. If blocked correctly, the RG should act as the lead blocker on the middle linebacker. He isn’t supposed to be hit until well passed the first down. OSU has had success running this.

Unfortunately this is one of the seven plays Mr. Meme decided to actually play aggressive. The LT is supposed to block him down, leaving the DE unblocked for Walsh to read. What happens is Abs completely blows by him and cuts off the pulling guard.

Walsh is hit in the backfield. The linebacker is untouched, coming in to clean him off. If you’ll notice how many Baylor players are in the OSU backfield? They have a talented defensive line, OSU needed to be on its game and they simply weren’t up to the task.

I feel like the entire offseason should be the linemen fist fighting each other until they can determine the top five meanest, nastiest, dirtiest, bad intentioned players they have. Once fall camp comes around teach those five their positions and tell them if all else fails, hit a different color jersey as hard as you can.

They need to play with anger and attitude, if they need a reference simply watch this game and watch how Baylor played.

Look, this was a tough loss, but this is a still a relatively young team. OSU is going to make the playoffs within the next two seasons. These linemen will get better with another offseason, they are getting some large freshmen to help with depth.
