How Do First-Year WRs Perform at OSU In the Mike Gundy Era?

The best way I’ve found to ease the pain of Dura- I mean, Underwood’s leaving has been to focus on this upcoming football season. The mullet. QB1. The President. #FreeJustice. The comparisons to 2011. Put it in my veins.

But, what might have me the most intrigued about this season is what Tyron Johnson might do this upcoming season. When there’s even the hint of a conversation about who is better between James Washington and Tyron, my only response is irrationality.

So, similarly to what we did with Justice Hill last season, let’s look at what first year wideouts have done in Stillwater over the last decade.

Year Player Rec Yards TDs
2015 Jalen McCleskey 29 253 3
2014 James Washington 28 456 6
2014 Tyreek Hill (JC) 31 281 1
2013 Marcell Ateman 22 276 0
2012 Blake Webb 14 218 1
2012 Blake Jackson 30 598 3
2012 Austin Hays 29 394 2
2011 Josh Stewart 19 291 2
2010 Michael Harrison 14 135 3
2009 Tracy Moore 11 183 6
2009 Dameron Fooks (JC) 10 147 3
2009 Justin Blackmon 20 260 2
2008 Bo Bowling (JC) 10 200 2
2007 Dez Bryant 43 622 6
2006 Adarius Bowman (JC) 60 1181 12
2005 Brandon Pettigrew 11 128 1
2005 Ricky Price 16 238 0

Things to note from the stats:

• Adarius Bowman is probably the most similar to Johnson in that an experienced and ready-from-day-one guy comes in and is ready to get significant playing time. *falls out of chair when one sees Bowman’s numbers*

• Interesting to wonder where Dillon Stoner would have been on this list had he not gotten hurt for most of last year.

• Cool to see similarities between Josh Stewart and Jalen McCleskey’s seasons. Never thought about that comparison before but I think it makes for a pretty good one.

• The only factor that can’t be determined from this table is how many targets Johnson will get. I think he’ll get top three targets for sure, but there are four guys on this list who are still in uniform who all deserve starter’s targets (McCleskey, Washington, Lacy, and Ateman).

• Wait, Blake Webb graduated?

• This list makes one realize how special of a position WR has been at Oklahoma State over the past decade.

• Marcell Ateman has been catching passes in an OSU uniform since the Wallace twins were in junior high…

• Bold prediction: Tyron Johnson puts up numbers similar to Dez’ first season and is the second leading receiver in QB1’s final rodeo.
