Five Thoughts On Texas Tech’s 63-61 Win Over Oklahoma State

BOX SCORE

Well, I’ve watched more enjoyable games. Actually, if we’re being honest, there’s a pretty popular Big Lead article from today that stole much of my attention during this game. I’ll let you find it — which you will be able to quite quickly — but I was wrapped up in many of the #Takes flowing on the worldwide web this evening. That’s not to say I didn’t watch OSU-Tech, only that I was less interested than normal (and these days I’m normally not that interested to begin with).

Anyway, Jawun Evans got hurt and OSU led or was tied for over 42 minutes in a college basketball game and somehow figured out a way to blow a 12-point first half lead as well as a five-point lead with 90 seconds left. Texas Tech stole a win at the very end of overtime and sent OSU back to Stillwater with a 63-61 defeat. Five #Takes.

1. Jawun Evans Getting Hurt Is Bad

To me the miracle of this game is not that OSU somehow figured out how to lose a game in which it led for the last 39 minutes and 35.5 seconds, but that it was even in position to do so to begin with. Jawun Evans didn’t play the second half with an undisclosed right shoulder injury, and OSU’s offense went from mediocre to a “we might need to call the FCC because there’s potential for a felony offense here” level in a hurry.

But it held Tech to 33 percent from the field and probably should have won the game. Somehow. Tech managed three-pointers with under 40 seconds left in both regulation and OT to tie it both times before the game-winning layup at the end. A road Big 12 with out Evans (even against Tech) would have been a water-t0-wine sized miracle.

2. That End of Game Management Though

Oklahoma State had the ball with 26ish seconds left in regulation and 24ish seconds on the shot clock. Tie game. Tyree Griffin and Leyton Hammonds managed to run the clock down and get a shot clock violation. Out of a timeout. With two seconds left in a tie game. I was moved to tears by some of the comments on Twitter.

3. The Mitch Solomon Experiment Is Not Really Working

Solomon continues to start. He fouled out with three rebounds, two points and three turnovers. He doesn’t even provide quality minutes.

In his last six games he has 25 fouls and 23 points. Of all the disappointments this season, his development is right up there at the top.

4. Threes and Turnovers

Oklahoma State was 4/17 (24 percent) from deep and turned it over 21 times which is its highest turnover game this season by five. Shoot 29 percent from three or turn it over 18 times or 17 times and you don’t even go to OT.

5. Halfway Through the Big 12 Schedule

I don’t mean to be presumptuous here, but what exactly are we rooting for the rest of the season?

Oklahoma State is 2-7 halfway through the season and staring last place right in the face. It has OU, Iowa State and Kansas all on the road. It gets TCU next week on Little Monday for what could amount to a duel to see who doesn’t finish last. Phil Forte is out for the year. Who knows about Evans. Is it time? Is this the end?
