Grading the 2016 Recruiting Class on Offense

Published

on

Oklahoma State wrapped up the 2016 recruiting class on Wednesday with no major disappointments and a few signing day surprises with the commitments of quarterback Keondre Wudtee and linebacker Calvin Bundage. Now that the class is over, I’ll hand out grades by position group on the offensive side of the ball on how each position was addressed.

Quarterback

As mentioned, Mike Gundy found his man at the eleventh hour on Wednesday with the commitment of Bossier City prospect Keondre Wudtee, who committed over TCU. Wudtee has a stellar skillset with his ability to move around in the pocket, throw on the move, and get up field to scramble away from defenders. It was a last minute addition, but important nonetheless.

Grade: A

Running back

The Cowboys had much less drama this recruiting cycle with long-time commitments from Justice Hill and LaDarren Brown, two speedsters who can keep the defense on their hills. I think Hill could be a candidate for early playing time in Stillwater, while Brown, the smaller of the two, could benefit from a redshirt season. Both prospects are lightning fast and have the potential to be really fun scatbacks for the Pokes, with Hill being more of a tailback who can develop into a legitimate Big 12 back. They also picked up a commitment from Ja’Ron Wilson from Trinity High School as a preferred walk-on, which was overlooked in the signing day hoopla. All three bring very intriguing talent.

Grade: B+

Wide Receiver

Dillon Stoner and Tyrell Alexander were the lone commitments of the class, with both flying under the radar for much of the recruiting cycle. I said earlier that I like Dillon Stoner’s chances to make an early impact in the slot for OSU with Glidden’s absence, and I think Alexander has all the moves to make an impact in the return game or at receiver early, too. At 6-3 with a background at both running back and quarterback, he has a special skillset with big upside.

Grade: B

Offensive line

OKC product Tramonda Moore highlights an impressive recruiting haul for line coach Greg Adkins going into his second year. He’s also bringing in all-state prospect Teven Jenkins, Coppell tackle Dylan Galloway, Minnesota tackle Matt Kegel, and Lexington (OK) lineman Tyler Brown. Junior college prospects Larry Williams and Shane Richards should be players who come in and compete immediately, if not provide some much needed depth. With OSU returning much of its offensive line from last year, this offseason should breed some healthy competition to hopefully lead to an improved running game.

Grade: A+
