Gundy: ‘We’ve Been Kind Of The Lateral Kings’
I was going to do a post that I usually do on Sundays entitled “the 14 best quotes from the OSU-KU game” or something like that, but there was only one that stood out after the Pokes thumped KU 44-20 on Saturday in Lawrence.
It came from Mike Gundy regarding the crazy lateral play off a Jordan Sterns interception. Sterns pitched to Vincent Taylor who pitched to Jarrell Owens, and we’re off. Gundy was asked about it in his postgame presser.
“We’ve been kind of the lateral kings,” said Gundy which was a reference not only to the Vincent Taylor pitch here but also the one against Texas early in the year.

Texas scores on a 22-yard run, then #okstate‘s Vincent Taylor blocks the PAT & pulls this shenanigan. OSU 16, UT 13. pic.twitter.com/uULnOa72Hy

“I’m guessing we’ll probably make national media (highlights),” said Gundy. “I was OK with one [lateral]. I wasn’t sure how many times we actually lateraled because I lost sight. I’d vote for one lateral and then tuck it away and get what you can get. It’s almost like Villi and Mote[kiai Maile] have been teaching them how to play rugby.”
Taylor also talked about the play on which he looked a little like Tommie Frazier from the mid-1990s Nebraska teams.
“People were telling me I just should have kept it and taken it to the crib, but one thing coach talks about is selfishness,” said Taylor. “They really don’t want us tossing the ball like that, but when we got to the sideline it was a fun play for the defense.”
They might not, but I definitely do. Long live the lateral kings.
