Impact Players To Watch For Baylor

Published

on

We already looked at what to watch for this weekend when OSU heads to Waco to play Baylor, but I also wanted to look at some of Baylor’s impact players. They have some horses on both sides of the ball so let’s get to know them.

No. 17 Seth Russell, QB

In seven games last season, Russell averaged 300 yards passing to go with four touchdowns and less than one interception, to go with nearly 60 yards on the ground and almost one touchdown per game. Russell has been named on nearly every watch list you can imagine (Maxwell, Walter Camp, O’Brien) and is the unquestioned leader of the offense.

The 6’3”, 220-pound passer was timed in at 4.49 in the 40-yard dash and while they haven’t ran him much yet, get ready because interim coach Grobe says the “offense is geared towards a quarterback who can run and throw and that’s what Seth’s strength is.”

No. 9 KD Cannon, WR

The conference’s most productive receiver has 352 yards through three games, averaging 14.7 yards per catch and scoring four touchdowns so far. The former Army All-American recruit had arthroscopic knee surgery this summer but has really rounded into shape as non-conference play has winded down. Russell’s favorite target, he’s started 20+ games as a true junior and has a way of getting behind defenses effortlessly.

No. 1 Taylor Young, LB

The highly productive junior recorded 80 tackles as a sophomore and was named the 2014 Big 12 defensive newcomer of the year for an incredible freshman season.

At 5’10” and 225 pounds, Young packs a punch but also has some playmaking skills in the middle of the field.

No. 9 Ryan Reid, CB and No. 28 Orion Stewart, S

The health and consistency of the two redshirt seniors on the back end of the defense will play a big part in determining the course of the game. Stewart, a two time all-conference safety and Big 12 defensive player of the week for his two interception performance against SMU, will team with Reid, Baylor’s top corner and leader of the defense, to slow James Washington and the potent Cowboy passing attack.

Reid hasn’t played since the SMU game when a receiver landed on his foot awkwardly and Stewart left the Rice game after incurring some rib issues, but the Bears have said they hope both will be back against the Cowboys
