Instant Recap: Oklahoma State Upsets No. 10 West Virginia, 37-20

In yet another early contest on Saturday morning for Oklahoma State’s homecoming against West Virginia, the Red-Bull chugging Mountaineers came into Stillwater and didn’t back down in a raucus Boone Pickens Stadium.

The Mountaineers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead to start the scoring, and WVU seemingly was controlling the momentum until defensive tackle Vincent Taylor forced a WVU fumble that gave OSU a first and favorable. The turnover lead to the first touchdown of the game for the Pokes to give them a 13-10 lead and steal back momentum, before shutting out the first half with a bang to score a TD to take a 20-10 lead into the break.

Coming out of the second half, the Pokes had a three-minute drive that landed them in field goal position with a chance to put more points on the board but squandered an early opportunity with Benjamin Grogan falling victim to the wind and missing a long field goal attempt.

But the defense tightened up in a pivotal third quarter, and after dropping a surefire INT earlier in the game, Ramon Richards pulled a rabbit out of his top hat that set up OSU in their own territory.

Mason Rudolph scored three plays later on the zone read keeper to give them a 27-10 advantage. But the Mountaineers scored on the second play of the fourth quarter on Skyler Howard’s own zone read keep and again in a chip shot field goal to score 10 straight and cut it to 27-20.

With the offense sputtering in the second half, Mason Rudolph #PutTheTeamOnHisBack to lead them to a much-needed scoring drive with a beautiful fade to Chris Lacy in the endzone to put them up 34-20.

And just as OSU fans were biting their nails with Dana Holgersen’s team in possession, the Oklahoma State defense came up with a huge INT by Kevin Henry that gave OSU the ball to allow them to run the clock.

The Ice Pirate drained a safety field goal with 1:34 remaining to put the game out of reach, and just like that Mike Gundy has his sixth win over a top 10 team during his tenure in Stillwater.

Oklahoma State faces Kansas State in Manhattan next Saturday.
