Justin Gilbert Sets 10 Alarms to Prevent Oversleeping

During his young NFL career, former Oklahoma State defensive back Justin Gilbert has yet to live up to the lofty expectations thrust upon him after Cleveland selected him as a top 10 pick several years ago.

And a major theme of criticism on him throughout his professional career, among several things, is his poor attendance to team meetings, thanks in part to what Gilbert himself says is attributed to him being a “hard sleeper.”

Now Gilbert, with the Steelers, has a solution to that problem by setting 10 alarms each night.

Here’s what he said about his excess alarms via ESPN.com:

And I’m not even exaggerating,” Gilbert said via ESPN.com. “I can show you.”

Gilbert’s “clock” app shows 10 wake-up calls, the first at 5:45 a.m. Gilbert allows himself a snooze — don’t we all? — but the next alarm hits at 6 a.m., followed by 6:07. The other seven are solely to satisfy his paranoia about sleeping too long. He never hears them, he says. “Once 6 hits, bam-bam-bam — I’ve got to get up,” said Gilbert, who readies for 8:20 special teams meetings Wednesday through Friday.

So yeah, with 10 alarms, his missed meetings issue should be one of the past. As a heavy sleeper myself, I can attest that multiple alarms is the way to go. I mean, making several million dollars a year would probably do enough to motivate me to wake up, but if it keeps him out of trouble and on the field then good for him.
