Les Miles Relieved of Head Coaching Duties at LSU

Coming into the season for Les Miles and LSU, expectations for the program were high — even by LSU’s standards. The Tigers were a preseason No. 5 team in the AP Poll, and behind star tailback Leonard Fournette, were expected to compete for the SEC title, and maybe more.

But LSU stumbled out of the gates in the first week, falling to Wisconsin as a heavy favorite, and falling once again this past weekend to Auburn and the Tigers after failing to get the final snap off in time which would have been the game winner.

The 2-2 start is the worst since Les took over the LSU program in 2005; not exactly a good report card for a coach who needed to make a good impression following last season’s near firing.

Defensive line coach Ed Orgeron has been named the new interim head coach.

“Decisions like this are never easy ones to make,” LSU athleteic director Alleva said in a statement. “Coach Miles has done a tremendous job here and he’s been a great ambassador for our University, which makes this even more difficult.”

“However, it’s apparent in evaluating the program through the first month of the season that a change has to be made. Our commitment to excellence and competing at the highest level is unwavering, and our goals for the remainder of this season haven’t changed. We have an obligation to our student-athletes to put them in the best position to have success on the football field each week and we have great confidence that coach Orgeron will do just that.”

Les Miles was 28-21 in his career as an Oklahoma State head coach, and finished his 11-year tenure in Baton Rouge with 112 wins to 32 losses.
