How Many Different Ways Can We Look at Mike Gundy’s 94 Wins?

We all know that Mike Gundy has long surpassed the record for most wins in Oklahoma State football record. But I’m curious about the breakdown of his 94 (and counting) wins. How do his teams fare at home? On the road? Thankfully we have our trusty College Football Reference site to determine such things.

Home: 54-18
Road: 33-25
Neutral: 7-4
Overtime: 2-3

Pretty standard. Great at home. Solid on the road. Winning games on the road is hard in college football. To paraphrase Gundy: Kids are always thinking about their girlfriends or being in their own beds … there’s a lot going on. But these records are pretty much exactly what you would expect to find from a high-level college football coach.

Now let’s have some fun with this.

When scoring 25+ points: 83-23
When scoring 30+ points: 81-18
When scoring 35+ points: 65-9
When scoring 40+ points: 51-4

When opponent scores 40 or less: 91-21
When opponent scores 35 or less: 87-15
When opponent scores 30 or less: 73-8
When opponent scores 25 or less: 59-2

I’m not completely surprised by the “when scoring 40+” numbers although 51-4 is pretty salty. But 73-8 when holding opponents under 30 points? That’s more shocking than Dion not taking the money.

There are innumerable ways to look at this, and all of them are fun, but since Gundy is always so insistent on having a big boy running game, let’s look at yards per attempt and whether you can get stops.

When rushing for less than 3 per carry: 9-12
When rushing for 3+ per carry: 85-36
When rushing for 4+ per carry: 63-24
When rushing for 5+ per carry: 40-16
When rushing for 6+ per carry: 23-5

When holding opponent to less than 3 per carry: 34-4
When holding opponent to less than 4 per carry: 61-17
When holding opponent to less than 5 per carry: 83-32

It’s not exactly breaking news to say that if you rush for 5+ yards per carry and hold your opponent to three or less that you’re going to win some football games, but it is interesting to see it down on paper. Hope you guys enjoyed this little exercise, let me know in the comments what you’d like to see on a post like this in the future, and we will do another one of them before football starts.
