Markel Brown Becomes Unrestricted Free Agent after Brooklyn Rescinds Qualifying Offer
It’s been an up and down week for former Oklahoma State standout Markel Brown. Earlier this week, the Brooklyn Nets made him a qualifying offer that would make him a restricted free agent with the organization, meaning that Brown could sign an offer sheet with any team but the Nets had the rights to retain him by matching any offer.
However, the Nets have now rescinded their qualifying offer to Brown, according to The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski, which now allows him an opportunity to become an unrestricted free agent.
Now, Brown is allowed to sign with any team in the NBA of his choice, and Brooklyn has given up their right to match an offer sheet.
This puts Brown in a bit of a difficult situation, because now he is at the mercy of teams looking to add final pieces to their roster for next year. With the 2016 NBA draft in the rearview, most teams have addressed their major needs through drafting or free agency. He’s not guaranteed a place anywhere in the league, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see someone take a chance on the No. 44 overall pick from the 2014 draft, who averaged close to 6 points per game in the 2015 season despite limited playing time in Brooklyn.
