We Might Have to Endure Two More Years of Baker Mayfield Instead of Just One

I cannot believe our good fortune! Baker Mayfield might get another year of eligibility after what was supposed to be his last in the upcoming 2016 season. Mayfield originally lost a year of eligibility because he transferrer within the conference (from Texas Tech to OU). But the argument goes that this wasn’t fair because he wasn’t even a scholarship athlete (I’m not sure why this matters?)

Anyway, the Big 12 has put together a team of professors to vote on the thing according to the Dallas Morning News.

The issue is on the agenda for the Big 12’s faculty representatives at conference meetings next week in Las Colinas, commissioner Bob Bowlsby confirmed. It will be a collection of professors, one from each Big 12 school who usually handle under-the-radar academic issues tied to athletics. The panel is chaired this year by Kansas’ Susan Stagg-Williams, who teaches chemical and petroleum engineering.

Sounds like the right person to decide the future outcome of Big 12 football races!

If you thought the Big 12 PR campaign could not have possibly been worse over the last few years, it’s about to top what it’s done. And this is the rub of the entire thing. Baker could bake in the SEC or Pac-12 if he’s not granted the extra year.

A long-time athletic director before becoming commissioner, Bowlsby said his campus experience helps him see both sides of the issue. He also is concerned about a scenario where Mayfield could transfer from Oklahoma outside of the Big 12 for 2017 and get an NCAA waiver for his final season. To say that could be a bad PR look for the Big 12 is probably an understatement.

“I think we all ought to be a little bit thoughtful about it,” Bowlsby told the Dallas Morning News. “Absent Baker Mayfield getting relief, he’ll have a year of eligibility left and won’t be able to use it in our conference but instead would go someplace else and use it. That might not be in anybody’s best interest. And we’re forcing him to [transfer].”
