Gundy May be Looking for Kickoff Specialist Through Walk-On Tryouts
Despite the success kickoff specialist Ben Grogan experienced last season handling kickoffs and field goals, Mike Gundy told reports last week that he is essentially open for new ideas to improve the kicking game – specifically in kickoff.
“We need to find a guy that can kick the ball out of the end zone,” Mike Gundy told The Oklahoman. “There’s got to be somebody on this campus that’s a soccer player or something that we can find, come over and kickoff for us. If anybody can do it and kick the ball in the end zone, then they can play for us.”
According to footballdb.com, Ben Grogan’s 60.1 yard per kickoff average ranks fourth worst in the FBS last season (in front of Baylor!), but it’s clearly an area that could improve, despite 22 touchbacks last season.
Via Kyle Fredrickson, OSU will host 40-to-60 potential walk-ons for tryouts this spring.
