Mike Gundy Pulled a Switcheroo on the Depth Chart Saturday
Mike Gundy and the staff released their first depth chart of the year with about a week until the season opening game, which took place on Saturday. By and large, the first release was mostly consistent with what came onto the field Saturday.
But one major area of interest had a tweak when the first offensive snap took place for OSU: Larry Williams, the former junior college all-american who was listed at No. 2 left guard behind Marcus Keyes, started the game at right guard.
Williams made the start ahead of returning veteran Jesse Robinson, who saw reps with the second team. The battle at right guard raged on into the fall but with Williams locking down the starting spot, OSU now has a legitimate two-deep at right guard and that depth was used Saturday.
Williams is a 6-4, 318-lb. guard who was an All-American at offensive tackle last season, and brings mobility and a mean streak at right guard — something the interior of the offensive line desperately needed and lacked last season.
OSU rushed for 142 total rushing yards on Saturday (including Rudolph’s negative 14). Overall it was just 3.8 yards per carry, so it’s still a work in progress. A step up in competition on Saturday against Central Michigan should tell us a lot more about the improvement up front, but Williams locking down the right guard is an encouraging step in the right direction moving forward.
