What Does Mike Gundy Think of Mason Rudolph’s Heisman Campaign?
Oklahoma State recently launched an understated, fun Heisman campaign for quarterback Mason Rudolph. I posted about it on here, and Mike Gundy talked about it after spring ball wrapped up recently.
“I think his success over a three-year period and his numbers kind of speak for themselves,” said Gundy. “He’s winning. He’s a great leader. We’re always a little tentative about that because I don’t want to put pressure on him, but I think it’s fair play that he’s earned that.”
Over the past two seasons, only three players have more passing yards than Rudolph, and only one of those (Luke Falk of Washington State) is returning next year.
“Our ‘unlocking the code’ that our social media and sports information people came up with I thought was a really good plan because it was neat and catchy,” said Gundy.
I would like to interrupt this public service announcement to note how much I love Mike Gundy discussing what really pops and is catchy on social media. Would sign up for a two-day conference of him and speakers he hired to come in and talk about how to build a media empire. Seriously would.
“But it wasn’t just us out there proclaiming how great he is, because that doesn’t really fit his role,” added Gundy. “He doesn’t feel comfortable in that area but his name deserves to be out there.”
He does deserve that.
Rudolph, as has always been the case, chose to focus on the team aspect and the thought of finally getting himself a Big 12 title this fall.
“It is a big motivation for all of us,” said Rudolph of the idea of having unfinished business with OU and the rest of the conference. “We are all excited and working towards the future and what the summer and fall camp holds, but we’ve just got to do our job day in and day out and let the rest of that stuff take care of itself.”
