Notebook: Oklahoma State-Baylor

Published

on

I posted my 10 Thoughts here, but had to empty out the rest of a monster notebook from Saturday night in Waco. Let’s dive right in.

• That was an insane uni matchup. All blacks vs. all whites. Good vs. evil. Chrome on chrome crime. I’m here for the two best uni schools in the Big 12 and loving every minute of it. Mrs. Pistols’ take: “I don’t like our numbers.” Me: “Nobody invited you.”

• Seth Russell is now 12-0 as a starter and the only player to win 12 straight NCAA games while simultaneously auditioning to be on Gold Rush Alaska Season 9.

• KD Cannon wore the No. 1 as a shout out to Corey Coleman who broke his hand? What? A broken hand? Should I wear Carson Cunningham’s tie in my next postgame Periscope video if he gets the flu?

• OSU is unfortunately no longer undefeated in lightning delays.

• Not OSU-Baylor related, but this made me laugh a lot.

• That delay had to be longest time between a TD and extra point in the history of football, yes?

• At one point Shannon Spake called Mike Gundy “Mike Dundee” which was amazing and I approve of. The Dundees!

• I had a fly in my shed for the majority of the first half. It was reminiscent of that episode of Breaking Bad where Jesse and Walt were cooking with the fly in their lab. Minus the meth of course.

• Gus Johnson called the RB behind Rudolph in the shotgun the “pistolback.” I know that’s the pistol formation, but I’m not sure I’ve ever heard the RB called the “pistolback” there. I loved it!

• More Mrs. Pistols. This time on the Baylor freshmen running out of the tunnel for the beginning of the game: “That looks like a recipe for death.”

• I have a hard time believing Seth Russell has legitimate 4.4 speed. Call me crazy.

• How can we not defend that over-the-middle pass to the TE or guy out of the backfield? How hard is that? I’m a Xs and Os neanderthal, but it doesn’t seem that difficult. Also, is it weird that Baylor scares me more when they’re deep in their own territory than when they’re deep in ours?

• How did this guy stay in the game? What is targeting?

• Jhajuan Seales is underrated. I’ll say it.

• This Blake Jarwin catch was incredible.

• I really liked how much Rudolph spread it out to his receivers. The double and triple teaming of Washington forced OSU’s hand in that a little bit, but this is a beautiful thing.

• OSU ran 100 plays. Baylor rank 65. The first time OSU has ever run 100 plays in the Gundy era. Previous high was 96 against Mizzou in the Cotton Bowl and Louisiana-Lafayette in 2012.

• Of all the choices from your own 28-yard-line on fourth and two, rolling Ben Grogan out there to kick from 45 would not have been my first one. Where is Ammendola?

• I’m a big fan of the delayed draw. I’m also a big fan of Jeff Carr. So I’m a huge fan of the delayed draw to Jeff Carr.

• Little Briles looked like he was wearing a nightgown. He’s the absolute worst.

• My bold prediction for the night was that OSU would rush for 5.0 YPC. Take out the sacks and they were at 4.7. Pretty good against a solid Baylor defense.

• The Justice-Childs 1-2 punch is straight cash, homie.

• Bro, what are you even talking about here?

• This crushed me.

• The “run the ball to the outside on the short side of the field” play was going to be the end of me. Then Justice almost housed one, and I was fine with it.

• OSU never led. That’s weird, right?

• If you would have told me KD Cannon would only have three catches for 18 yards, I would have thought OSU cruised to a W.

• This is what our offense used to look like.

• I’m in favor of all trick plays involving Dillon Stoner.

• Not sure it will ever get old hearing “Barry Sanders, the deep man”

• I thought this was great.

• OSU’s pass protection was terrific all night. Part of that was because Baylor only rushed three at times, but Rudolph had a loooot of time for most of the night.

• Yes.

• What if Grogan makes the 45-yarder earlier in the night? Maybe we don’t go for it late. Maybe we kick the FG when it would have been 28-27 to make it 30-28. Then it would have been 35-30 at the very end, and we would have been driving for the win. That’s a lot of what ifs. #butteflyeffect

• A lot of people were saying Justice recovered the fumble on Baylor’s two after initially dropping it, and it’s true that he momentarily had it again (see screenshot), but he never actually had possession.

• What was OSU thinking not kicking the FG with 30 seconds left? Get the points then try and get the onside kick and toss a hail mary? I don’t get it. What was I missing there?

• This is true.

• And so is this.
