Notebook: Oklahoma State-Texas Tech
I posted my 10 thoughts on the Oklahoma State-Texas Tech game here. This is the rest of a lengthy note-taking session during a game that lasted longer than one of Kliff’s manscaping sessions.
• I was watching the beginning of the game on Watch ESPN. The announcers didn’t know they were live. It didn’t get much better from there for them.
• I’m going to go out on a limb here and say something preposterous that some people have a difficult time understanding, apparently. Alan Eck might just be a really bad referee. He’s the head man who had the OSU-Texas game. He wasn’t a whole lot better on Saturday in Lubbock. The targeting call was absolutely atrocious, but OSU got a couple of equally bad calls against them.

• If somebody said “your life is on the line and you can pick one of the following to take place — a Mason Rudolph completion to David Glidden over the middle on third and long or Steph Curry hitting one out of 10 free throws … I’d at least think about it.
• Speaking of Rudolph on third downs. Can we get OSU’s clock operator to have the down number get “stuck” on 3 for the rest of the season? That would be nice.
• Why do you think ESPN hasn’t shifted to yards/play and points/drive stats? Do they think we’re that unintelligent as an audience? Glenn Spencer himself has said total yards and total points are worthless as standalone stats and yet ESPN just keeps pumping them.
• I admit, this awesome.

• Does Mason need a throwing glove? There’s no shame in it, I guess (there kind of is). But it’s certainly better than fumbling three times on the year without being touched.
• Jakeem is Tyreek minus the extracurriculars. He’s a pleasure to watch (against other teams).
• One play I really like that OSU doesn’t use that much is the extended playaction call. When it looks like a zone read but then Rudolph drops back and guns it. That’s sweet. It takes up a lot of time, I realize, but it’s a good look. Another play I love that Tech ran: fake throw to one side and roll out to the other side. I feel like I basically love anything Les Miles would look at and say, “I want.”
• This was impressive.

• Were you more scared when your wife (or self) gave birth or when OSU kicked to Jakeem Grant every time after he took that one to the house be honest.
• I love this.

• On Patty Mahomes: Don’t wear II on your jersey, I didn’t know he was black and I really didn’t know his dad was the Pat Mahomes that played in the MLB. I am a college football blogger so these things aren’t really excusable either. I also love his release. I don’t really know why, but it looks slick.
• Seems bad.
#TexasTech has now lost 16 consecutive Big 12 games to teams not named Kansas and Iowa State. Last win was Oct. 19, 2013 at West Virginia.

• Note from the second quarter: You could get into shootouts with tougher defenses (like, literally any of them).
• The flip to Jalen McCleskey is OSU’s new inside handoff to Joe Randle. I have no idea if this is good or bad.
• Get out, Kliff.
On broadcast, Kingsbury reportedly tells his defense: "I want that ball back. Get that ball back. They cannot stop us today."

• OKC Dave was correct in our podcast last week about OSU’s receivers being deep but that not necessarily being a great thing. Who’s the go to dude? It seemed like everybody had at least one drop on Saturday. There’s no Rashaun or Blackmon where you only need Jason Pierre Paul’s hand to count the number of drops they had in their careers.
• Rudolph is an underrated runner. That doesn’t mean I want him running. But it’s true.
• If Oklahoma State loses this game, this team is the 2008 team all over again. Now? I agree with this.
@KOCOCarson @GeraldTracyIII They could win 14 games this year before we know what to think of this team.

• We need to talk about the end-of-half play OSU tried to run with James Washington and David Glidden. We ran that play about three times a game in co-ed flag football where you could have a guy tip it to a girl and have it count as a catch. Glidden has clearly never played co-ed flag football.

Also, Washington can leap.
• OSU gave up more points in the first half on Saturday than it had in any full game all season.
• Hopefully it’s not longer term, but the play Jimmy Bean got hurt on was stupid. He made a great tip of the ball, a lineman caught it and he got hurt trying to tackle that lineman.
• Speaking of linemen and tackling people. How badly could this have gone for Jakeem?

• Announcer said “downtown is going to be a little extra crazy tonight” about Halloween in Lubbock. You think?
• Before I die, I’m going to find out with the [screwdriver motion on facemask] is by college quarterbacks.
• I enjoyed tweeting this.

• The sideline reporter noted that Gundy has become friends with a mental health doctor but I think she meant, like, life coach mental health not schizophrenia mental health. In which case, I have many jokes.
• Robbed!

• Shades of Brandon Weeden against Troy in 2010 with that Mahomes fumble in the second half.
• J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones are going to go as J.W. Walsh and Mason Rudolph for Halloween.
• What a tweet here. What a tweet!

• OSU should run the ball out of the diamond formation or with four wide and that pretty much sums up the scenarios in which OSU should run the football.
• I love Miketavius.
• Why did Tech keep going deep in the second half? They’re the ultimate “doesn’t need to go deep and can just dink and dunk you to your wits end with Jakeem” team, no?
• Yes (and maybe they’re just your best ball carriers).
I'll give Mike Yurcich a lot of credit for finding creative ways to run the football: Walsh, Carr, Taylor are your leading ball carriers.
— Bryan Keating (@KOCOKeating) October 31, 2015
• Do we want to talk about the Walsh fumble and Ray Tay recovery or did that just bounce OSU’s way because Walsh is a gamer? Look, Walsh has been awesome all year, I’ve given him his props. But if we’re going to kill No. 2 for his TOs, we can’t look the other way when No. 4 nearly gifts the thing to Tech.
• Dime piece here.
https://vine.co/v/e3in03b9nWq
• I feel like Gundy kneeling with two and half left on the clock is a page of Holgorsen’s playbook he left in his motel bathroom that Gundy framed in his office and smirks at every four or five days. Might as well hack into the jumbotron and start screaming expletives at the other team.
• J.W., boss.
Watch the J.W. block. How great is that. pic.twitter.com/ckCeR8QsZA
— Pistols Firing (@pistolsguys) October 31, 2015
• Gundy, by the way, already had his visor on before the Richards pick six. I like.
• Seems good.
J.W. Walsh put up 218 yards by himself in the 4th quarter today on a total of 4 rushes + 2 passes.
— Max Olson (@max_olson) November 1, 2015
• OSU just torched a halfway decent Tech team with its backup QB and 4th string RB playing most of the second half. What a world, you guys. What a world.
