Oklahoma State Announces Plans to Join Mega Camp Days after NCAA Reverses Ruling on Satellite Camps

Oklahoma State essentially created the idea of a satellite camp. So it only makes sense that the ruling to reverse the ban of satellite camps is a big boost for the Cowboys, who are already taking advantage of the new decision.

For student athletes, satellite camps allow players a chance to showcase their talents in front of multiple schools. These camps are hosted by another institution (by NCAA requirement, must be outside of 50 mile radius of the school), where coaches can travel and scout potential prospects.

For OSU, this is an opportunity Mike Gundy has taken advantage of for many years. In the fertile recruiting grounds of Texas, where OSU has continually hit during the Mike Gundy era.

“It has given us an opportunity for 12 years to go out and coach, and allow the young people in other parts of the state who may not be as financially able to come to Stillwater and be at our camps, we can bring our show to them,” Gundy told the Tulsa World.

And now that the ruling has been reversed, he plans on joining a “mega camp” in Texas, which will be hosted by the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

The benefits of the camp are obvious. Regardless of whether anything comes from the camp (e.g. offers, commitments, etc.), it’s an excellent marketing opportunity for Oklahoma State and the football program.

In the talent rich state of Texas, being able to attend a camp and see hundreds of kids, flash your school colors, and show what type of staff you are is invaluable.

And for aspiring student athletes, the benefits are tremendous.

Satellite camps cost anywhere from $30-$50, where they pay to attend a camp with multiple schools in attendance. Almost like a one stop shop scouting combine for high school students.

And that seems to be exactly what OSU’s head man wants.

Said Gundy to USA Today, “I’m shooting for the Walmart of football camps.”
