Oklahoma State Offers 5-Star Power Forward Vernon Carey

Oklahoma State has offered a scholarship to the No. 2 overall recruit in the 2019 class, Vernon Carey. The power forward from University School in Fort Lauderdale is a five-star, 6-foot-9 prospect. He’s also rated as the top power forward in his classification.

If the name sounds familiar to you, it should. Carey is actually Carey Jr. — the son of Vernon Carey, who won a national title with the Miami Hurricanes in 2001 and played eight years with the Miami Dolphins. That might help explain why he’s considered a Miami lean among 247sports experts.

The younger Carey is a smooth athlete who has a polished inside game and finishes with ease around the rim, and his ability to run the floor makes him an ideal fit in Mike Boynton’s offensive system, which will be uptempo similarly to Underwood’s system. He can step out and hit the midrange, too. Here’s ESPN’s scouting report on him.

Carey is best along the baseline with his short drive game and demonstrated a beautiful pull-up jumper to mix in with his post play. At this time attacking the rim is what he does best and he’s very effective along the baseline. His natural passing instincts are impressive as he is a willing passer to open teammates in scoring positions. Doesn’t force the issue and plays with a impressive confidence but not a cockiness. His next step is to go from prospect to player.

Also in the mix to land his services is Baylor, Florida, Florida State, Virginia, UConn, Louisville and Saint Louis. Although Duke, Kansas and Kentucky have showed interest, they’ve not yet extended offers.
